Moncton surges, Fredericton holds steady and Saint John slows down.

2010 Moncton housing starts chart

My chart illustrates the end of June 2010 numbers supplied by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for the the Fredericton CA, the Moncton CMA and the Saint JohnCMA. New housing starts are one important indicator of local housing markets.

Total housing starts in Fredericton are holding steady while the Moncton starts are off to a much stronger pace in 2010, fueled mainly by a rise in multiple unit starts. Total starts in Saint John are at their lowest level in recent years. It's still somewhat early in the residential construction season. Will Saint John recover? Will Fredericton or Moncton falter? Be sure to check back in October when I'll post the third quarter results.

note: CMA stands for Census Metropolitan Area and CA stands for Census Agglomeration

I'm not sure that I believe that housing starts are any indication fo the market, but you sure can't have sales without inventory. Here in Tennessee, we are still working our way through the inventory we had already built.
