The American Pickers have nothin' on me!

Saturday I took my wife and our two little ones out to check on a few of our listings out in the Hemet San Jacinto area.  On our way back, I was doing what the guys on American Picker call "Freestyling".  We came across this old house with signs up, stuff out and flags everywhere.

I slowed down a bit to peruse their inventory, and as I was near the end of their lot... I saw it.

Me: BABE!!! Did you see that?

Wifey: See what?

Me: That ol' real estate sign!

Wifey: No?

I flipped a u-turn, and of course halfway into my illegal u-turn I noticed the cop.  So I pulled over to the curb and believe it, or not he just ignored me.... today must be my lucky day!  :)

The lady meets me as I jump out and walk to the front of my Suburban, and she asks me how I'm doing.  I told her well, and then I cut to the chase...

Me: You sellin' that old real estate sign?

Her: Sure.

Me: How much do you want for it?

Her: $10.

Me: $10???... Sold!

Me:  Can I just take the sign?

Her:  No, it comes with the bench.

Me:  Oh... I don't know if it will fit in my Suburban.

Her: Ah, sure it will.

So we give her $10 bucks and she helps me load the thing.  It took a bit to make her fit, but we got it in there.

While we were jamming that old thing through my cargo doors, I asked her where she got it.

Her:  I made it.

Me:  You did?  No Kidding?

Her:  Yep, the back was made out of an old water bed from the 70's (notice the mirrors) and the seat was made from the wood of a 100 year old home that was tore down.

Me:  Hmmm.  Where did you get the sign?

Her:  I used to work for that place back in the 70's.

Me:  In Canyon Lake?

Her: Yes

Me:  Wow.  Well have a great day.

Her: You too.

Me: Hey, by the way, how long has that been sitting out here in your front yard?

Her:  About 3 years... she turns to walk away with a big smile on her face, well it actually might have been a laugh, but whatever... I just stole a magnificent piece of So Cal Real Estate history.  For now, she sits in our courtyard in Temecula.  Eventually, she'll end up next to Beeson Creek in our little vineyard up in Middleton Idaho...

Those two so called pros from A & E's hit show "American Pickers" have got nothin' on me.   They would have never found this old gem.  Heck, they are probably out in an Iowa field somewhere looking for an ol' rusty bike, or something... rookies!

Good catch, Cory and Michelle! A sign and a bench for $10! I would have liked to hear more about the woman who sold you the sign though.

Sweet Pick! Love that show...  I sold an old timers agents house years ago and she had some old real estate signs from selling Las Vegas real estate in the 60's. Should have offered to buy them...

Maria: When I first saw her she was sitting in her chair with a large umbrella overhead, just inside the gate waiting for her next victim.  :)  It looked as though she had seen a lot of sun in her day, so I imagine that she is at her post every weekend.  She seemed to enjoy her little side job/hobby.

Paul:  The ol' gent probably would have thought you were crazy, but they sure would be nice to have now, eh?  We sold a house for a relative a few years back that had been in that side of the family for close to 100 years.  When it sold and the wife of my distant cousin moved out, I was given a bunch of old civil war items that had been in the family for over 140 years, including my Great (X3) Uncle's Civil War Diary.

Tish:  Yeah, it's not worth much, but I do like old cool stuff... especially if it's work related.  If I had an office in Canyon Lake (15miles away), that sign would be displayed proudly on my office wall.

Don:  Hopefully, maybe early retirement is around the corner.  lol
