There are 44 towns in Grafton County on the Northwest side of New Hampshire, and I'll continue my daily series offer some insight in to -two towns each day till I have done them all. Ashland – Grafton county NH
Is the geographical center of New Hampshire, nestled within the Lakes Region, bounded on the west by the Pemigewasset River and adjacent to the White Mountain National Forest. It offers many outdoor recreation activities, dining, shopping and several historic homes. Ashland is widely known for the beautiful, scenic views of Little Squam Lake (the original “On Golden Pond”)
Population 2000- 1,955; land area 11.7 square miles
Schools: Ashland Elementary (grades K-8), Plymouth Regional High School (grades 9-12)
Recreation: boating, beaches, day hikes.
Special Events: 7/31/10 “Hope It Floats Canoe & Kayak Poker Run”

Benton – Grafton County NH
This Grafton County Town offers endless outdoor recreation- with 3 ponds, ½ dozen streams, Appalachian Trail crossing through Town and sits at the foot of Mountain Moosilauke a very popular hiking destination. It is largely surrounded by White Mountain National Forest and lies almost fully within the Connecticut River watershed. This was a town similar to Lincoln in that it was well suited to sawmills and lumber production and has seen that industry disappear. Benton now has some farming and orchards.
Population in 2009 was 356- but this is a 13% growth since 2000. Land area 48 square miles. Tax Rate $ 9.22/1000
Schools: SAU 23, Haverhill Cooperative School District (grades k-12)
