Recently in the Twin Cities market a person posing as a REALTOR® knocked on a door with a sign in the yard and asked if he could preview the property for his client. The seller allowed the agent in and was assaulted. This tragedy can be avoided. When you sell your home be sure an appointment has been made. If someone knocks on your door – request a business card and ask the person to wait outside (a locked door). Call the office and verify that this person is in fact a REALTOR®. If it is after business hours simply tell the person to call your agent, or if you are selling by owner (FSBO) tell the person it not a good time and you will have to set up an appointment time for a later time. If you do not have an agent and are selling on your own, please have someone in the house with you when you show your property.
Other seller safety tips include:
Remove or lock up all guns and hunting knives.
Be sure you have an escape route at all times.
Keep your phone or a cell phone on your person so you can call for help if needed.
Buyers are not exempt from safety issues. When you decide to buy follow these safety tips:
Meet your REALTOR® at their office, or a public place for the first time – this is a safety tip for REALTORs® too.
When looking at a FSBO bring a family member or friend with you.
Drive yourself!
Always be thinking about how you can keep yourself safe. For the most part there are not many safety issues noted in our local market, yet it is better to be safe than sorry.
