In Jefferson County, 11,800 children live in poverty and of that, 2,400 are actually homeless. Jeffco Action Center distributes basic school supplies to thousands of low-income students every year. This year, an expected 5,000 or more students are in need of valuable school supplies to help them start the school year right. Registered families will receive supplies August 9 th through the 14 th at O'Connell Middle School.
According to the National Retail Federation's 2009 Back to School Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey, conducted by BIGresearch, the average family with students in grades K-12 is expected to spend $548.72 on school merchandise. The economy is having a major impact on back-to-school spending. For families struggling to pay for food, utilities and housing, the money is simply not there.
We need the help and support of our communities to help us meet this need. Currently, our stock is only at about 75%. We are still in need of:
Backpacks - help us give one to every child!
Spiral notebooks (wide & college ruled each)
Badded & pocket folders
Loose leaf paper (college & wide rule)
Volunteers are also needed to help sort, pack and distribute supplies - a great family activity.
School Supply donations can be dropped off at Jeffco Action Center, 8755 W. 14th Avenue, Lakewood, CO. Dock hours are M-W, F 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, Th 8:30 am - 7 pm and Sat 9 am - 12 noon. Cash contributions designated to school supplies are invaluable, simply write "school supplies" on the memo line of your check or include a note with your donation.
