Not to Complain, but RealTown Blogs Seem to Have Fewer Server Problems

By

I love my ActiveRain blog, but I've noticed a few things about RealTown that I really like.

It's just plain easier to upload photos and graphics on RealTown, especially those with large file sizes.

  • I can load bigger photos and larger file sizes.
  • I don't receive all the "Bad Gateway" messages that I get here when I try to upload photos.
  • The RealTown server stays open to uploads in progress that take longer than 30 seconds.

The last one is a huge advantage when you are in a remote area like I often am.  My wireless broadband signal is really wimpy on Madeline Island.  That means it's difficult for me to upload really great high-resolution photos in thirty seconds or less.  It appears the AR servers assume that a photo file is too large and if the upload isn't complete by that time, I get kicked out!

Help us out here, ActiveRain.  Not everyone has access to an ethernet connection wherever they go.

I've never heard of RealTown.

Do they have the same amount of Google Juice as ActiveRain?

Hi Eric,

I think I have a RealTown account--but, I've not done anything with it for a couple of years!  I need to check it out.  Thanks for sharing!

Matt - RealTown has been around for awhile.  I consider it another place to get exposure for my listings.

Ralph -  I'm pretty sure that RealTown doesn't have the  Web presence that ActiveRain does.  However my posts there show up in Google Alerts for the search terms I'm tracking and I see my posts there within a couple hours of uploading them.  I like the look of their blogs and I see some value in being there as well.

I'm a Chevy man, and someone else drives a Ford.  If everyone else drove Fords, I would have a choice to make: Lick 'em or join 'em.  Like I said, I'm a Chevy man, so there's no joining 'em.

However, this isn't Chevy v. Ford, an I have both Active Rain and Real Town.  I'm driving the Chevy (er ActiveRain), and the Ford is rust'n.  I can only drive one at a ime well...  Someday... maybe...

Right now, let it rain!

Eric:  go ahead and complain.  Sometimes complaints actually do help.  But often times complaints fall on deaf ears here, as well.  I will go over to RealTown and try and find your blog.  Is it at all like Active Rain ? I have never been there.  Glad it is working for you.  AND... how nice to "see" you.  I have missed you.

By the way... just now, in simply trying to log ON to Active Rain, I got one Bad Gateway, and one Proxy Error.  Sheesh.  It is 12:45am here in Fort Worth.  Their servers just cannot be all that busy at this time of the night/morning.

Could you put a link in this post... to help me find you on RealTown ?  Thanks a bunch.

Debe - Yesterday was the first time I actually used my RealTown blog.  I found myself puttering with it because I wanted to publicize a listing and I couldn't get my AR blog to work.  The RealTown site would let me upload large files without timing me out.

Rosalinda- I rediscovered my RealTown blog yesterday when I found that I couldn't upload photos to my AR blog.

Fred - I'm not comparing these two sites or favoring one over the other, I'm only pointing out that there's obviously a way to make the AR servers function better and reduce member frustration.  Particularly on behalf of the folks who have paid memberships here, I'd think AR would want to find a way to put an end to all these "Bad Gateway" messages and the frustration they create.

Karen Anne, here's a link to my RealTown blog (such as it is):

http://www.realtown.com/broker15/blog

This "Bad Gateway" stuff is frustrating, yes?  I actually went over to RealTown to putter with a blog there out of sheer frustration.  I understand of course why the IT people at ActiveRain don't want to have their server tied up endlessly with huge uploads and it's their right to limit file sizes.  But now AR is encouraging folks to upload HD profile photos using their new upload mechanism which makes that possible.  If it's possible to upload HD profile pics, why is it not possible to upload a 3.5 MB property photo?

I don't plan to do much on RealTown, but it's nice to know that I have a place to go when I can't upload a listing here.

It's delightful to see you too!

Eric,

You know something that I just realized--I saw that you are an ePRO too and I think that class is where we were sent to sign up for a RealTown blog there--I just never really got going with it!

Debe,

Yep, the RealTown blogs are part of the ePRO program.  I think ePRO was just a bit behind the curve when it came to competing with ActiveRain.  The blogs at RealTown are still free, though.
