Your blog … my blog …. to each his own

By
Real Estate Agent with Pointe East Realty

This is a rebuttal to a great Realtor and Blogger … Karen … I didn't want to take up all her white space with my comments to her blog post but I did want to respectfully disagree.  So you may want to link to Karen's thoughts in her blog first to make more sense of my post . "Wall to Wall Is for Floors, Not Blogs

Karen my dear Karen .. you and your followers are adding fuel to the fire and making fiction come true … shades of Fahrenheit 451 …. and for those that have attention spans of a butterfly .. I'm not talking about Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911 … Although you make good points (really - sincerely) … I have to disagree 80% ….. a blog is a personal journal, a personal mussing … yours is yours and mine is mine.  If you don't have the time to read it … don't read it …. If you don't like it … you don't like it … Maybe some day you will take the time, and I'm not writing to make you like it or me …. It's still a free country … well almost not ….

Some of the best writings in history were old time blogs (scribes, notes, journals) … and sometimes they were long and sometimes short and most of the time they weren't all deck out with color and graphics and white space to attract butterflies. They were written sometimes not to even attract readers … but to put thoughts and points of view onto paper, to make a statement, to tell a story …..

Then there are photo blogs and art blogs and all kinds of blogs …. I didn't read anything in Roberts Rules of Order about the 3 second rule for blogging or white space.

That's why we are in the mess we are in in this country .. and world … no one takes time to read … decipher, critically read critically think;  and everyone has to do it the same … like sheep following each other into the fire.

Facebook and twitter make good 3 second blogs …. there's white space … they are short or very short and FB has wonderful graphic symbols and pics … farmville and mafia wars have the best … and they all look alike.

Sorry for taking up so much of your space Karen … I like you … really … and your blog …. but I respectfully disagree, and I couldn't make my point in 3 seconds or less.

Respectfully… "The Non-Conformist"

PS  I will try and heed some of your advice …. once in a while! Sorry guys … no pics in this one and no fancy text or fonts.

Rick-

I think you make valid points. And I agree that the attention span of Americans is an issue, but great content can capture more of an audience if it is displayed well. Thanks for your thought-provoking blog.

I agree with your points...if a blog - or a letter - or any written material, for that matter is well written and captures my attention, I can read for HOURS.  If it's poorly written or doesn't hold my interest, then I don't care how pretty it is, it's gone.

Rick, I really don't this this is going to create wide-spread appeal for you.  Too much negativity.  And, in trying to build your case... the sources you quote as evidence of your point... are all from another time and another place... and usually quite a while ago.  Yes, you do your thing, and Miss Karen will do hers.  For you to compare her blog posts to Facebook and Twitter... is just plain silly.

I don't see much critical thinking going on here.

I also see that you are a Newbie... so, Congratulations on joining Active Rain.  It appears you have much to learn, and this is a great place to do it.  There are many great sources for you to seek and learn from, and Karen is one of them.  Good Luck to you.

Thank you Carolyn …. I respect your thoughts and opinions … but I'm not here to win points (active rain or otherwise) ….. and I certainly don't want to write to win appeal, our current media giants do a good job of that. And I'm not running for congress. Guess you missed my point in the blog. The FB reference was as it was … facebook is a blog … its a personal journal …. and it follows the 3 second attention rule perfectly.

Newbie ?? You must be counting points …. for point counters yes … new points … but a member for a long time, and and agent even longer.  One can't always judge a book by the points on the cover.  You have to read the whole book to understand it .. and even then, you never know if your interpretation is really how the author felt … poetry is a great example of this … so are paintings.

I do have great respect for Karen …and yes I can learn from her, from you and others I never said I couldn't or wouldn't  …. but I don't always have to agree. You have your way, and I have my way …. of reading and writing. That's my point.

I hope you'll come back … and I hope you won't always agree with my writing … nor do I want you to always like it …. because then … you wouldn't be you … you'd be me or just placating me!    Have a productive day!

PS: The Bible was from another time and place … it's a collection of journals …. (blogs) …. I think it's still relevant to some … who agree, believe … and understand it …. Fahrenheit 451 was fictional …but … I think the authors message was subtle and timeless, and very appropriate to our discussion ….being the same.  That's my interpretation.

I totally agree that we are free to do what the reader wants to do and the writer wants to write.

It's a little of both for me Rick.  Your post was short enough that I was willing to read.  However, a great photo that captures my attention, or some bold text, bullet points and such to allow me to do a quick skim before I decide to stay, is much more likely to draw me in.

Posts that go on for 2 or 3 page scrolls with nothing but heavy text are likely to keep me from even starting to read.  Those other font elements will give me a tip to the blog's content and then reading in depth seems like a payoff.

Rick, unfortunately there's much criticism on blog posts, how they look, how well they capture the readers' attention, even the title.  I'm not sure what it all means (I guess I'm a newbie, but not).  Maybe I'm trying to decide if I want to be a blogger or a Realtor.  Selling real estate, and helping my clients out of mortgages they can no longer afford, are very important to me.

I began blogging to see if I could reach out to a market who may need my help and services.  Social networking seems to be the thing these days.  There was even a blog written about how blogs should be limited to 3 paragraphs because we all live in a world of fast food and twitter w/ tweets of only 140 characters (that blog has since been deleted by its author).  That blog really pushed my button, because IMHO, a blog is a platform for the writer to express themselves in more than 140 characters and if there is a comments section, for the reader to provide feedback.  Hopefully, a dialogue takes form and everyone can learn from the blog and the comments.

You may be interested in reading this response is from an Activerain blogger, who welcomes long comments, as well as long blogs!

Thanks for your blog, and it's good to be a non-conformist as long as that's who you are!

Thanks for all your comments, I think some people confuse writing a blog with writing an advertisement; once in a while they cross paths, but most of the time they are different!

and Pamela .. special thanks for turning me on to Inna and her followers … refreshing.

Blogs are like assholes, everybody's got one.  What makes me read a blog, and remember a blog?  Content.  I'm searching for substance, whether I am looking for an opinion (blog), a novel, a friend, life partner, or a realtor.  So show me your mind and your soul, not just your vapidly pretty face (or shiny backside).

I don't read blogs that are slick and superficial, no matter how visually appealing they may be.  They might catch my eye, but they are like teflon. I soon forget them, and I certainly don't go back.

There is no hard and fast rule for anything, least of all blogs.  In the end, someone who shows me he or she is well read, yet can think for herself, someone who shows integrity, ingenuity, and humanity -- this person will get my attention, and my business.

There are no rules.

Rick - glad to see some point-newbies have the balls to voice dissent to a popular opinion, and gladder still that you've discovered a pretty neat crowd of non-conformists on my little blog here (pictureless, on most days, and no Scribfire for this gal).  That said - can't blame folks fro trying.  As i said in my comment on Karen's post - it's quite a bit easier to prettify a blog than to write something worthwhile.  I just find it sad that so many seem to demand an liquid diet, and pretend they can still decipher the taste of foie gras in that concoction.

Good to meet you, and absolutely, welcome.

OK, I read it & it bored me to death honestly.  Roberts rule of order?  Has nothing to do with blogging 'technique'.  It's not the folks on AR that have a problem with people today having an attention span of a knat.  That's just how things are.  You can agree or not but I'll tell ya, you aren't in the majority on this.

I read (or tried to read) a featured post the other day by Fred Sanford a national trainer & there was no white space, no pictures, no nothing.  Droned on and on.  I really couldn't get thru it.  Isn't the point of your 'writings' to have someone read them & get business?  What you are talking about is a personal journal perhaps that should stay in your nightstand drawer.

Blunt back at you dude!

Rick,

I don't start a post with the idea of finishing in a certain number of keystrokes.  I stop when I finish what I have to say ENDS.  I may add a little something to "spiff" it up to appeal to those that need a little visual to stay focused.

Lyn, Thanks for your comments.  ? was it my blog or Karen's that bored you to death? or both. My guess both.  That's okay ….  Not everything is written for Lyn … or Rick.  The reference to Roberts Rules of Order .. .well that's my metaphorical .. . humorous, some may call phescious  side coming out … (which you no doubt didn't get)  Karen's blog was about order . rules ….. and as the lay person above (non-realtor) Linda pointed out "There is no hard and fast rule for anything, least of all blogs."  I think she is a published writer/author … at least she is not a Real Estate agent …

I do agree with you  … people today have the attention span of a "knat" …  I prefer butterfly … as they are more beautiful, graceful … but non the less, flutter around … not landing on anyone spot more than a few seconds. It's a kinder description of todays society.

I do agree with you on Fred Sanford …. He's always been boring to me …. even 20 yrs ago …

The point of your writing's "to have someone read them & get business …. yes and no …. ask Linda above. From what I have seen  .. most AR users are failing miserably on both accounts. I don't like herding sheep.

Personal journal … look up the wiki and Webster if its been updated …. Definition of a blog. To each his own … point of my rebuttal. If your bored …. flutter on …..

As of tonight at 9:00pm it's still a free country with freedom of speech …. sorta. Karen wants to put some rules in the game.  It certainly isn't Mr. Jefferson's America.

And lastly  … me a Dude … not.   My son's the 19 yr old surfer Dude …. I'm just the old blunt man, trying to revise the revolution, that my ancestor John Hancock participated in …. Keeping the faith!

PS I read your blogs … some I liked and some bored me …. I will follow you … cause I like your bluntness too.

Really. now for the "what does this graphic say?" Love this spam filter. Brings up a lot if interesting words to look up … this one I know "Cinnamon" Not supposed to have it … If you have read the book … "Eat Right for your Blood Type"  you know what Blood Type I am … Not A but Atypical, like the "Dude" I am.

Have a productive Day!

Not to be a peckerhead, but Lyn - you DID read the blog... I find it so strange when people gravitate towards thing they quite obviously have no interest on only to critique their very existence.  Whatever happened to that remote control we've all been endowed with here, albeit a virtual one?  See, it's perfectly ok to disagree with something, at times vehemently, but to have read a post and then state that it was 'boring' eludes me. Do you finish boring 800-page novels as well?  I am just curious.
