Amherst, New Hampshire is a beautiful New England town located approximately 10 miles west of Nashua, New Hampshire, and as of the 2006 census had approximately 11,566 residents.
Amherst has a beautiful historic district. Many homes and buildings are well preserved in the center of town and the original details and designs can be enjoyed while taking a stroll through the Amherst Village.
In 1728 Amherst was chartered as Narragansett No. 3 and it later was called Souhegan No. 3. In January 1760, it was chartered as Amherst and named for General Jeffrey Amherst, the commander-in-chief of the British forces in America at that time.
The Village Green is the venue for holiday parades, band concerts and organic local produce. It is one of the popular meeting places throughout the year.
Famous people connected with Amherst include Horace Greeley, the famous editor of the "New York Tribune" who was born in Amherst and Daniel Webster who argued his first case in the local courthouse.
There are many house styles in Amherst, New Hampshire. Beautiful historic or older homes, single family homes, condominium developments, active adult communities, horse properties and more.
Local businesses and restaurants are located in the village and on route 101A making it convenient for shopping.
