You know you are working too much (or maybe addicted to "contact") when you feel the need to take your Blackberry onto the lawnmower with you. It's not logical since you obviously couldn't hear it ring, and it would be hard to read an email while bumping along. However, this is exactly what I did one hot, summer day. About 30 minutes into my ride, I saw the red light blinking and picked the phone up out of the cup holder where it had been "helping" me mow the lawn. Did I get off the mower? No... Did I even stop the mower? No again! Well, long story short, I dropped the phone and it skidded right onto the ground in FRONT of the mower (about 3 feet). In my dumb stupor, I actually watched myself run over it instead of hitting the brake! Needless to say, it's now in thousands of pieces scattered across my half-mowed lawn. No big deal, you might say. The phone wasn't under contract, and I was due for an upgrade! However, had I ever backed up my contacts? Not me! So I run into the house, go onto the Verizon website and swap back to my ancient Treo with ancient contacts. Lesson learned...I know have the new Droid and have yet to back up my contacts!
The next week, I'm meeting a client and a contractor (both good friends) and become bored with their talk outside of a house. I begin looking for 4-leaf clovers in the lawn, and they both join me after I gleefully find one almost instantly! They both find one each within a minute! I had never found one before, and this must be my lucky day! I return home for a quick pit stop before heading into town to find my husband putting up a new mailbox. It seems someone had run over ours when his jeep top had come loose, and he lost control of his vehicle. Way to start off my lucky day!
I then head over to pick up some paperwork from a house a client of mine and I had done an inspection on the night before. I whip up into the driveway, set my parking brake (the driveway is STEEP), and hop out to run in really quickly...motor running. You would think I would put the car in park, but that would make too much sense. I'm about 10 feet from the car when I notice it rolling down the driveway. Thank goodness for that parking brake! I caught the car, door still open, and hopped in and skidded to a stop just as it rolled into the road headed for the house across the street. Whew...I need to meet a friend for lunch now and unwind.
I head to our downtown area's new BBQ restaurant to meet my friend, ready for some food and relaxation. We order, wait, wait, and wait. The room is very smoky, but we just assumed that was normal. Suddenly, the fire department bursts in, hoses drawn and hustle us all outside. Seems the smoker had caught the roof on fire. There were 3 fire trucks and a dozen firefighters bustiling around. I'm standing there, starving, with my plastic water cup in my hand. Sadly, we evacuate as lunch will have to wait.
I don't think I will ever pick another 4-leaf clover as long as I live!
