RainCamp Niagara Falls, Canada, A Very Special Event

That's right, there was a special RainCamp in Canada on Wednesday, Aug 4, with attendance by Special Invitation.

As my wife needs a break from work  eventually, we decided to visit Niagara Falls as she had never been there. This thought to visit the Falls was not without a selfish motive, however, as it's location on the Canadian border is a relatively short drive from Brampton, Ontario Canada, home to Al & Peggy Cunningham.

As I do on occasions, I do call and chat with my fellow ActiveRainers, and there will sometimes be a spark that just says you want more.

That is exactly what happened with the Cunninghams, and I felt that a trip was in order, and why not set it up so that I could also add to my family of friends.

The day and times were set. We did our part and got to Niagara Falls NY the evening before, 480 miles of a drive. Only fair to do this as Al is after-all, an older person, and one must show age it's respect. The greetings were like lost family, and understandably so. As anybody who spends time on ActiveRain knows, reading the blogs and sending comments back and forth leads to a camaraderie and good will feeling that goes beyond meeting someone for the first time. For those ActiveRainers that attend those other RainCamps know, this feeling is well understood. Seeing someone in person for the first time is not strange because the warmth and caring has been expressed numerous times in our posts.

We talked and visited. My wife, Cauna, who is a very warm person naturally had no problems immediately accepting these two people as long time friends, and this feeling stayed with us for the rest of the day. We found the time to sit and relax and just visit.

We had a very pleasant and very long lunch, at which not only the families were discussed, but surprise, using ActiveRain was also discussed.

I felt like such an expert, maybe it was from staying at the Holiday Inn, or quite possible attending the other 3 RainCamps. I shared some of what I thought I learned to Al & Peggy, and they also offered me a few tips on how to do things just a bit better.

On the Canadian side, the atmosphere is very much a Carnival, with the big rides, the side shows, the souvenir shops and a very relaxed vacation type of atmosphere.

The noise of the falls is ever present, and we were fortunate to get a higher view of the Falls, after the boat ride while riding an enclosed Ferris Wheel

So many people about having a great time. We went into a little restaurant for something to drink, and just sat and chatted. Three hours later we thought it might be time to get up and stretch our legs a bit.

It is unusual to go so far away, meet with people and not be at all uncomfortable. There were no apprehensions about meeting the Cunningham's, just a great warm feeling with the first hugs and hand shakes. This is the type of family ActiveRain can actually start.

Al and I were both at ease and were pleasantly surprised when we both found Craig Rutman sitting on a bench outside a souvenir shop.

We immediately recognized him, in spite of the Photo-Shop job he had done trying to create another blog post. Craig you are such a kidder!

RainCamp, Niagara Falls, NY. Not sponsored by Bob Stewart, nor presented by Bob Kinney, but entirely the creation of the ActiveRain Platform and the sprit that exists on this site.

They say there are two sides to every story. You've just taken the time to read our side, maybe you'd like to see and read the Cunningham's side?

Maybe this can be the start of a new offering from ActiveRain: Tell us about you special ActiveRain RainCamp, or Where's the next mini RainCamp?.

Craig, hrumph! you want to meet the Cunninghams and not me?, well!

Geroge, they are every bit what you would expect them to be. and nada!!!! I behaved, my wife was with me and I would never hear the end of it had I made another donation!

Joan, it was that two birds with one stone opportunity, and I had actually gotten the thought from Al in a response to a blog I posted about driving to meet someone. He offered to meet me half way, but when I saw all that white hair, I knew it had to be more effort on my part. Thanks for stopping

Hey Al, there is a reason for that. When I applied for my passport renewal, I had to provide an itinerary in order to get it expedited. When the Passport agency noticed your name, I was approached by Homeland security, and told that you were wanted on this side of the river for questioning. I couldn't betray you even to my own government.

Ed - Your story seems unusally similar to mine.  Arrange via phone and e-mail an initial get together, meet two Toronto area real estate agents somewhere between us (in our case about 20 minutes drive for both sides), meet in a small restaurant and spend 3.5 hours on a luncheon discussion in our first meeting (we have had a few get togethers).

If you don't mind the links, you can read both sides of our story at:

BTW, Ed, Kerrie had told me your third RainCamp was at Boston.  Unfortunately, I don't recall crossing paths even though we were in the same room.  It would have been nice to meet you.

Great story, Ed! Since your post got featured, in the interests of US-Canada relations, I suggested Al & Peggy's post for a feature too! BTW, I've driven through Prospect twice in the past 4 days going to showings in Naugatuck!

Marc, I truly enjoy meeting people who's blogs I follow, and Al & Peggy are truly special people. On their version of your meet & greet, I actually commented on the blog, to which Al replied that if I started the drive up, he would start the drive down. So obviously you started that thought. I would presume as there are so many people up your way on ActiveRain, if they do have an out of country RainCamp, Toronto would have to be a drive consideration.

Hi Ed,

I read Al & Peggy's side of the story first so I just had to learn the rest of the story.  Love the humor you added with references to RainCamp.  Last fall I had the pleasure of having lunch with Heather Chavez overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  Like you & the Cunninghams we talked & talked.   Fortunately my Hubby is a very understanding person.

Have a great weekend.

Gene, the people here on the Rain are truly special and all worth spending the time to get to know, not to mention a great base for future referrals.

Mary, there were some moments when my wife, who seldom is at a loss for words, said very little. As we were driving away, she commented that she had never heard me talk so much with so much enthusiasm, so the Rain friendships must definitely bring out the different side of me. Thanks for stopping

Pat & Wayne, as I was away this week, you get a pass, but you can't get to Naugatuck unless you drive down Rt 68, and our office is right there just below the town's center.

Ed.. ANOTHER Raincamp?  This now makes 4 for you.  Do you think you should speak with the staff and at the next Raincamp if only Ben is there, you can fill in for Bob. :)

Glad you made the trip.  The Cunninghams seem like a real nice couple, at least from all the comments they have left on my blogs.

You mentioned going to Niagra Falls on our trip to Boston.  You already knew about this Raincamp then, didn't you?

All though I have not attended an official RainCamp, back in June I attended a marathon mini camp in Seattle with Charles Buell. I spent almost a week out there working and sight seeing. On Sunday we met for breakfast with Steve Smith from Bellingham, WA to north and his certifried assistant Nutsy. Charlie wrote a brief account of our meeting that morning.

Like your experience with the Cunninghams, seeing Charlie was like meeting an old friend. Actually we had met briefly here in CT twice, (He grew up in Eastford) when he had to fly out for family related business.

AR is such a great place to meet and get to know people. It was great to read about your "mini camp".
