I am going to stray a bit from the usual real estate related post to discuss something that I feel strongly about...living environmentally friendly.
Living on the bay most of my life has opened my eyes to how harmful chemicals can upset the ecosystem. Today, we have 99% less clams, fewer mussels, and quite a few species of fish have found a home elsewhere. It is not because the bay is "polluted", but the chemicals have changed the PH, nitrogen levels, etc. These changes have resulted in what can be called an infestation of sea nettles (jellyfish) to the point where kids no longer want to go swimming.
Living even up to 10 miles from a waterway can have an impact. Laundry detergents, shampoo, tile cleaners and much more all get washed down the drain. In most cases, all of that does not always end up in a sewer treatment plant. Living at the beach, we also have outdoor showers which have no drains and that soap eventually finds its way into the bay just a few feet away.
Recently, we began to switch everything over to green products. My wife and I began to purchase from a company that sells exclusively online. We never heard of them even though they have been around since 1985. We ordered a few items to give it a try. My wife is a creature of habit and never changes her routine. So, getting her to switch products was going to be impossible. However, she said these products were actually doing a better job than what she was using. The price even with shipping was lower than what she was paying for the items we were using for years.
So, we are sold and now we are getting our cleaning products, everything for our medicine cabinet, health & beauty items, weight loss products, vitamin supplements and much more. All environmentally friendly, child safe and pet safe. Nothing has child safe caps because they are not needed. The final kicker is that it also enables you to get discounts (up to 15%) at over 650 stores such as Target, Best Buy, Office Depot, Macy's, Barnes & Noble, etc etc. Plus discounts on your cell phone plans and much more.
Even better....we were able to turn this into a business that my wife manages. Many of our friends have been coming over and they notice these items and have asked about them. Many of those friends are now also buying online and we really didn't try to "sell" it to them. This really sells itself. Oh and the products we are buying are a tax write off since they are being used for the business too....incredible.
After two months, we are feeling good about the products we are using. Better for the family and environmentally friendly ....and the business aspect of it is already covering two car payments. Loving it !
