Beautiful day in Jerome, AZ - not a ghost in sight

This was a rare Sunday for my husband and I... neither one of us had to work.  So we escaped north to Jerome, AZ.  I had seen an episode of Arizona Highways on TV that talked about Jerome and its reputation as a ghost town.  After our visit I found a website called Jerome Times to find out about the town's history.

We knew Jerome was at a higher elevation but we had no idea it was literally built into the side of a mountain.  We kept climbing and climbing.

Once in Jerome, we were struck by how quaint the town was as well as how scary it would be to live in some of the cliff-hanger buildings.  It was a beautiful drive and a fun day.

The above picture is a view from one of the parking lots.  I think the next time we have visitors another trip to Jerome is in order.

Kathy, I've so wanted to drive up to Jerome.  But, I'm severely acrophobic and I heard the road leading there was like a roller coaster.  Is it worth the drive and the probable intense heart thumping?

I love Jerome. I've been there a few times when I livid in Flagstaff. I want to take my family there for a visit and stay at the old Miner's Hospital. I hear it haunted. As long as there's a hottub, we don't care about the visitors from beyond.

I was a lot younger when I use to spend time in Jerome, and the road up and into town never bothered me, but I'm starting to see that as I get older, I start to notice the dropoffs more and more.

Juli - I think it is well worth it, but then I don't suffer any phobias.  The road DOES wind but we felt it wound much more when we passed through town and wound down the backside to come home through Prescott, rather than go back the way we came.

Endre - It took us less than two hours to get there from Surprise so it might take you a little longer depending on which part of Scottsdale you are in.  We actually got a late start to our day and were surprised (no pun intended) we got up there and back as soon as we did.

Debbie - There were a couple of spots (drop-off wise) that were pretty interesting.  While there I was wondering why the original settlers would have thought this was a good spot to build a community.  After reading about the history it makes sense.  Money will make people do strange things.  I'm glad they did settle in Jerome though because it is a neat place for us to visit now.

Hi Ray!  What's cookin' in Colorado?

Great photos, Kathy! I live in Prescott Valley, so a trip to Jerome is an easy trip. I enjoy it every time I visit. The town of Jerome is where the mines were. We have a lot more to see in Prescott which was also a mining town.

Kathy, did you go to the old movie theatre / museum when you were there? I found that stop most interesting.

John - Unfortunately we got a late start to our day so we didn't have time to see all the sights we would have liked to see.  When my son gets married this fall we'll have lots of family visiting.  I think I'll bring them up that way and really make a day (or two) of it.
