DRIVE-BY Comment HITS one of my Blogs... AGAIN!

By
Industry Observer

Well for the second time this week one of my blogs has been “hit” with a comment from someone outside Active Rain.

This time the anonymous comment hit a blog I posted way back on August 10th entitled Stepping on "accredited/certified” stager’s toes…

And while I could let just the anonymous comment sit there quietly and go unnoticed, I think it points to the need for respecting and understanding within the staging industry and amongst staging peers.

While for the most part the Anonymous Commment was insightful from their perspective it did take a bit of a “pot shot”… regarding "those without formal training and a resource for ongoing education” they question training, abilities, success and ethics. They went on to make sure I understood who Barb Schwartz was and what Stagedhomes.com is and offers.

It is obvious that the commenter is passionate about home staging and their affilation with Barb and Stagedhomes.com and wanted to make it clear why they were so… which I TOTALLY respect.

I agree 100% with what they say about EDUCATION it can help and is WONDERFUL! I have said this over and over and over. But there is more then one place to gain knowledge and an education.

Lessons learned in a class can be applied in our life/field. But what is often forgotten is that the lessons learned in life/field are brought back to the class and IS what IS thought.

The commenter goes on to speak of Barb Schwartz and the role she has plays in the industry. I agree, since Barb coined the term “staging” she has worked tirelessly to bring it life, perfect it and create credibility for it within the Real Estate Industry. EVERY stager (good or bad) needs to acknowledge and respect that fact.

However, while the concept may not have had a name, the idea of preparing a home so that it looked it absolute best when it went up for sale, has long been in existence. To deny this fact is an insult to realtors who have done so for years.

My own training in “staging” started years ago… with every move my family made. Prior to each move, my father, a sales executive, exhaustively prepared lists of projects we had to accomplish and maintain each time we were about to sell our house. (He took the same approach to selling our used cars… we “detailed” our cars long before it was the term used to describe the process.)

So while Barb definitely “graduated” way ahead of me, I and MANY others could say we went to the same school… that school being the School of Hard Knocks for Stagers. We have learned by doing.

Again I think it bears repeating… Lessons learned in a class can be applied in our life/field. But what is often forgotten is that the lessons learned in life/field are brought back to the class and IS what IS thought.

Under the name Barb first gave it… an entire industry is rising. Now there ARE many entities offering training. One of the concerns I have is that people WILL be duped and taken by less then credible stagers and training “schools”.

Also and unfortunately, as the industry rises, there seems to be a network of feudal staging war lords who have developed their own staging kingdoms… and are right now battling it out.  At times the “industry” is more focused on discrediting each other and has reduced itself into being petty bickering bunch.

I could easily take any number of course on staging… but I choose to stay non-aligned with any staging “kingdom”.  I have become a LOUD voice for unity within the staging community and have found an audience among stagers who share my thoughts and hopes for an industry built out of competitive kindness. I know a healthy industry will not only benefit and protect the consumer but also those people who chose to make staging a career.

I believe that if there is to be accreditation /certification the INDUSTRY and it’s members should govern the process. It is easy for a company to say they do, it is easy for a school to say it does… but I believe an INDUSTRY (NOT JUST ONE PERSON, ONE COMPANY OR ONE SCHOOL) should dictate what ultimately constitutes accredited professionalism amongst those who call themselves “Stager”.

Some final thoughts... after reading what "Anonymous" wrote, I do not understand their need to hide. What they said was a genuinely fair assessment from their perspective.

As for my persepective, I stand with my name behind my words… even if at times that means I stand corrected.

PS: A benifit of a "drive by comment"... it sure can inspire dialogue!

Hi Craig,

I agree with a lot of what you said in this blog, most especially that we need to band together as an INDUSTRY and develop some guidelines.  You, yourself, have said it before - course designations do not make you a 'stager'...it is the gift of creativity and a desire to help that are the cornerstones of this business....you either have 'it' or you don't and a course will not change that.

If I could make one point which would drive home the idea that there is NO NEED for competitiveness in this industry it would be this: There are hundreds, even thousands of houses for sale at any one given time. If we can educate both sellers and realtors about how important it is to prepare the house as a marketable product and offer them a service that will do that for them, then there will be plenty of 'staging' opportunities for us all!

I'm not looking to corner the Long Island, New York, or Metropolitan area market; once I have educated everyone in my area, there will be plenty to do right here!  That's not to say that I wouldn't take a job in another area if I were asked, but I will not be actively soliciting my services outside of my own 'territory'.  There is no need for 'pettiness' or 'ownership' in this industry!

And remember - these are just my opinions and they are not directed at any one person or 'teacher'!!

SCOTT: Ya maybe my blog title may have been a bit sensational... but I was taken aback by it being anonymous and thought it would be a great hook into the rest of what it I spurred me to write.

I did go back and add a few words to my intial post... just to make sure readers GET I did/do not feel attacked.

The bulk of what I spoke of is the message/opinion I wanted to share.

Craig

VAL: Professional competition IS the American way. I am ALL for it... and am not affraid of it.

But I draw a line and call it UNPROFESSIONAL when one stager totally discredits or snubs another soley because they don't share the same intitial training.

I'm from the south, where we dont have drive bys, but I'm willing to take shotgun from the drive by car...Then I will say, whoever it is that keeps messing with Craig better leave him ALONE!!

Craig, unfortunately opinions are like farts, some should be kept silent and then there are those that are loud and stink.

I have been a lurker on this site but after the second anonymous attack on you- I had to say something.

Craig, it seems like the staging industry is similar to the virtual assistant industry as there's not an industry standard, yet, regarding education. A business is more reputation than association. I don't know anything (I was going to say much, but anything is more correct, lol) about the staging industry. One thing I do know about is education. I've homeschooled my teenagers since they were 11 and 12. I completely agree that a piece of paper saying you gratuated is nothing more than a piece of paper saying you take tests well. Let your testimonials say more than your degrees.

Craig,

This is a topic I am also very passionate about.  I have learned sooooooo much in the field and through networking on AR that is truly PRICELESS!!!  I am a firm believer in education (even though sometimes I think I know it all!) and training.  I know that many people take these courses to help them learn more on how to MARKET their BUSINESS along with staging.  If there was a STANDARD in the STAGING INDUSTRY I would be first in line to sign up....unfortunately there is no INDUSTRY STANDARD for stagers as of yet and many people, including myself, are getting confused deciding which "professional" organization they should join.

Thank you Craig for helping to educate everyone!  Happy Stagin'

First, let me just say that is some picture. It caught my eye!

I agree totally with your post. I have been staging the houses that I list for years. Long before it was given a name. There are some of us that have that in-born ability and those that need to be "schooled" on it and even those that after being "schooled" still don't get it.

Your part in the profession is no different than that of the Realtor. There are so many different designations, out there for the Realtor to pay for and line someone elses' pocket. Yes, some of them need to know how to conduct themselves with a Buyer and then get the ABR designation but not everyone requires attending and paying for a class to have the ability to properly take care of a buyer. And believe me, there are a list a mile long of these lovely designations that are lining someone's pocket!

For someone to take a potshot without having the balls to acknowlege who they are...is just plain cowardliness...don't take anything seriously unless it is backed with a signature...can't debate without 2 parties, present.

Gena, you're absolutely right about that. I love watching those design shows, especially the one where they take a magazine photo and recreate the room. I can't for the life of me make those ideas come to life in my own house. I try, I just don't have that talent and no amount of schooling is going to change that.

Now give me a job you do and I can find a way to automate it so that it cuts your time, sometimes in half! That's where my talent is and I do it naturally.

Hi Craig, a few days ago I voiced my thoughts about anonymous comments in An open letter to stagers and "Ellen" so I won't repeat it here but...

A simple solution would be to consider posting your articles using the members only option.

I also wanted to say that the title of this blog is a perfect example of using a great headline to generate interest, readers and feedback. After all, isn't that what blogging is about?

Craig, no matter how many designations someone has or who they are affiliated with, will make them a good stager. You can not teach passion. And you sir, reek of passion. That is what make s good stager or Realtor or anything else. Doing what you love and doing it because you care will win every time.

Craig,

I am an A.S.P.M. and I L.O.V.E. working with other stagers who aren't under my same accreditation!  I believe that education from all sources is much more beneficial for our clients!  I need/require/must have those who are first and foremost invested in integrity...regardless of school/accreditation.  I would like all stagers to have a unifying thread--something like realtors have with their universal 6%--but relative to the region.

I have a private staging story I would like to tell you sometime.
