In helping a client locate her next home, I am reminded of simpler times. I am currently selling my large home with its extra large property because my life has become more complicated than I anticipated when we bought it just three years ago. I just don't have the time or energy for the upkeep that I used to enjoy. I've actually become resentful of having to take what spare time I do have to do yard work or clean the extra rooms we just don't use.
My client asked for advice to help her decide whether a townhouse, small single family dwelling, semi-detached or condominium is best suited for her. She doesn't garden nor does she enjoy mowing the lawn, clear the driveway of snow or undertake any major improvements. Right away the reaction is for her to look to a condo but additional condo fees seem to persuade her to look at the other alternatives.
Given my own experiences, I happen to know that if you don't like to do those added things that come with owning a home, don't squeeze yourself into your lifestyle for the sake of a couple of dollars. After awhile, you begin to realize those additional condo fees make up for the costs associated with owning a property and inconvenience of having to do the upkeep yourself. Otherwise eventually you'll either move or become resentful and stop enjoying your home.
So for the sake of a few additional dollars, it's better to go with what your comfortable with up front and don't force yourself to live a lifestyle that is not suitable for you.
This is clearly another occasion when I can say, "take my advice, I'm not using it."
