Canton real estate - does having Dad along help or hurt

I had a young couple a few months back looking for a piece of Canton real estate - and I had an rhetorical question of whether having dad along help or hurt the young first time home buyers.

This dad was trying to teach the young first time home buyer what to look for.  That's a great thing.  It never hurts to listen to an experienced home buyer on what they know.  But then dad went overboard.  He kept on telling the kids which house to buy.

IT'S NOT HIS DECISION.  The kids were smart though.  Sure they took in what dad said but then they made a decision on what home they wanted.  They made a decision based on their finances, their likes, and their needs.

Many times whether it is dad, or even me.  Yes we both have lots of experience withhomes.  BUT..... it's not our home.  We all have certain likes and dislikes that determine which house we buy.  I am more of an entertainer.  So I like an open layout.  I like the "party" area.  Whereas some people will dislike a home like that.

Bottom line is: if you are a first time home buyer listen to the advice given to you.  But make the final decision yourself.  Remember you are the one that is going to live in the house.  Not dad!

Welcome back, Russ.  I haven't written because I knew you had your hands full.  And probably your heart empty.  But, you have plenty of friends here that missed you.

Take care.

I was helping a professional young lady purchase a property.  She was able to buy what she wanted without having to sell her current home first, but was interested in selling it right away. While in the process of going from binding agreement to closing, Mom sends another agent over to daughter's house who writes up a listing contract and leaves me out in the cold.  The listing house is only about 50 minutes drive from the new purchase, something not outside my taking care of where I live. the agent she got wasn't even from the nearest office of the corporation he works under. Guess why? He told them he would give them a discount of 1/2%.  That might amount to a total of $600.  Or is he going to also discount advertising the listing?  What was and is my client already will spend more than $600 on pmts., ins., etc. on the house in less than one month sitting there. The agent who did that, knowing I was working with this person already has all of two listings. Time will show if he stays in business taking what he can grab, or can he earn clients on his own? Yes, I wish the parent (Mom) had not thought she was being so helpful.

Dad needs to know his role in the process. I am sure he only wanted to help but more often than not dads help their kids out of the market.
