Oh my god!!! What am I going to do! We pull into the campground, set up the camper and, as I do 50 times a day, I check my phone for emails, my favorite blogs for current posts and my Facebook account. But to my dismay... there is NO cell reception! Time to stress!
My first reaction to the situation was to do the cell phone dance. You know the one... you put the phone in your right hand and wave your arms looking for reception. You move over here... you move over there. Then you swith hands and repeat the dance. Unfortunately, or fortunately... the dance didn't work and I had to come to terms with the fact that I had been shut off.
What was amazing is that after a day, and yes... it took an entire day, I stopped thinking about what I was missing out in cyber-space. The phone was placed in the car.... and was (almost) forgotten about. I not only didn't miss it (most of the time)... but it was almost a calm that came over me. I was unplugged and I no longer had the distraction of constantly checking. I could keep my focus on the here... what was happening now... with me... with my children.... with our vacation.
I often joke with friends about how we ever got along without cell phones. How did we keep in touch? How did we know what was going on? Where did we get directions? Information? I know that I have become attached to my phone and often feel disconnected without it.
It was nice to have those few days and I think I will be checking the 'outside world' a bit less frequently than I used to.... but man, was it good to get back to 5 bars!
