Backcountry Living Wild at Heart :: Highlands Ranch Colorado :: Parks, Trails and Open Space

BackCountry’s surroundings are so stunning, we decided to let the natural world influence the design of our homes and community. There are three key drivers we used in the creation of BackCountry—Water, Open Space and Connections. Everywhere you look in the community, you will see these design drivers at work.

Water: The use and management of water is instrumental in the design of BackCountry. From the innovative ways stormwater is managed to mimic natural systems, to the ponds of still water and the grassy wetlands created for your enjoyment, we have enhanced the landscape to create what nature would otherwise take years to establish.

Open Space:BackCountry speaks to the wide open spaces that are Colorado and the West. By preserving a network of open space, watersheds, grasslands, woodlands and wildlife habitat, we preserve areas that sustain wildlife and connect us with nature and the past. Open space is truly part of the fabric of BackCountry as it weaves throughout the community.

Connections: A variety of trails connect the homes to the parks and the community’s crown jewel — the Sundial House. Follow the trails farther, and you’re soon entering the 8,200-acre BackCountry Wilderness Area.

Community Gathering Spaces:
Discovery Center — BackCountry's community information and registration headquarters.
Sundial House — Your gateway to the Backcountry Wilderness Area.

Planned Community Parks:

Discovery: Discovery Park features a meandering waterway that makes its way into a pond along the Discovery Center’s edge.  You’ll find some small, private spaces, perfect for reflection by the water or time with a good book.

Solstice: The largest manicured lawn in the neighborhood, Solstice Park, also anchors a line of trees that stretch south, leading up the hill to the Sundial House.  Perfect for a game of Frisbee® or a picnic, this park is a favorite when you’re looking for some open space.

Reflection: An open green area surrounds the lake, with a deck / patio adjacent to the water’s edge.  Enjoy the surrounding views, or take the paved trail that leads from the park to the Sundial House.

Water’s Edge: Directly downhill from the Sundial house, the Water’s Edge Park has steep slopes that lead to the water’s edge.  Nestled along the main road to the Sundial House and close to a number of custom homes, the park is a wonderful spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee.

Overlook: Built above the surrounding terrain, this park has earned its name – Overlook Park.  There’s an observation area where you can look down over the Discovery Center, or take in the astonishing views of the surrounding neighborhood.

Windmill: Just over a hill and with its own manicured lawn, the Windmill Park is somewhat removed from the other parks, but is sure to be a favorite gathering spot for neighbors who live close by and are attached directly by trails.

Wilderness Areas:

The South Rim — 467 acres of the 8,200-acre Backcountry Wilderness Area have been set aside as private open space for residents of BackCountry.

BackCountry Wilderness Area — 8,200 acres of land serve as a wildlife habitat — not to mention an incredible place for a walk.*

Community Trail System:

The community will be interconnected with a trail system that can lead you to any of the six community parks and up to the planned Sundial House where countless adventures will await you in the South Rim and beyond.

*Approximately 8,200 acres in the southern part of Highlands Ranch have been designated as Backcountry Wilderness Area (Open Space Conservation Area). This area is dedicated to the preservation of open space, wildlife habitat enhancement, outdoor recreation and other permitted uses. Of that, 467 acres have been set aside for the exclusive, private use of BackCountry residents.
