Our Lives Need More Than Just Work & Real Estate!

By

25/8, 366,  year after year.  Yep, We're NEVER not breathin', livin' real estate machines.  We make Ahnold and the Terminator gang look like wimps!  Just try and keep up with us!

But that's not real is it??  We've got to have a life of our own, as hard as it may sometimes feel to scratch out that little bit of personal time needed to recharge!

You've got to set some boundaries, or every waking moment will be devoured and you'll never have that time to reset your mental meter back to Serene!  Our clients know Sunday mornings are off limits, after church we'll be available, but until then, the phone calls and emails can wait. But you've got to find other times for yourself, your family, your friends!
Cutting the Cake
Recently, we've squeezed in a little extra R&R time without detriment to our business.  Liz's brother got married in Maryland the last weekend of July, so we made a quick trip out and back for the wedding and reception.  The return trip driving observations were the genesis of Miss Bad Manners!

Liz's mother, sister and nephew visited that following week, so off to Newport Aquarium for the day.  For those who haven't been here, Newport Aquariumperhaps the best views of Cincinnati are actually from across the river on the  Cincinnati from Newport on the LeveeKentucky shoreline!

Sunday before last, we went to the theater to watch Inception.  Really enjoyed it and would recommend if you haven't already seen it!

We'll admit, sometimes that Redbox rental sits on the table for 3 days before we get the time to watch it, but our priority is to meeting our commitments to our clients first.  Get our listings fully marketed, emails responded to, phone calls returned (before 9 pm at the latest), then if the evening schedule allows, press PLAY!

Hope you're managing to squeeze in whatever time you need

Somewhere over Canada

to recharge, and not just waiting for that week long vacation!

Get the bits and pieces you enjoy and you'll be in better condition to deal with the rest! Stop and smell the flowers! Smell that?

So what do you do to recharge?

Hope you're having a fantastic week!

Tish,

We find that most of our clients are pretty rational.  It's the pop up caller who has no sense of us that is the most demanding.  We get back as quick as we can!

Liz & Bill - In this business I firmly believe we have to make time for ourselves and our family.  I know when I started 9 years ago everything I did was real estate related 24 hours a day for the first year or two trying to build my business, but I quickly realized I couldn't keep going on like that.

So now my family takes mini vacations to disney, universal studios, busch gardens and sea world on a somewhat regular basis.  Occasionally my husband and I drive down to the keys for a couple of days and I noticed I'm much more productive when I take time for myself.  I also coach soccer, which is a great stress releaser.

Michelle,

I'm a bit of a workaholic, and sometimes Liz just looks at me and says "Stop!  It can wait!."  Even though most of the work is on the laptop in the evenings, there's a point at which the mental sharpness gets dulled.  There's never going to be a day that EVERYTHING you want to do will be done!  You live in a great place for those mini vacations with all the attractions there!  We don't get away too often, hoping to pop up to Maine for a few days in September/October time frame, but haven't locked that down yet.

Hi Liz and Bill~

Weddings are awesome, eh? And so is time to celebrate life, as you suggest. Here in Asheville, we love the opportunities for R&R...from visiting with friends at the various tailgate markets, to concerts on the green, to rafting, to horseback riding at the Biltmore Estate...to (my favorite) photo shoots of mountainscapes...

Chris, I see the Left Coasters are waking up!  And Ahnold only asked for cool 80s style biker clothes!

It's all good here.  Went to Minneapolis on day job business Monday afternoon, got back in yesterday evening.  A little AR withdrawal in not being able to make a second post nor readily reply to the comments... yeah I could have via the BB, but naaah, I'm not that thumb proficient!

Liz & Bill - AMEN!!!  I tell my clients from the get-go that I am NOT available 24/7 and let them know that if that is the kind of MLO they are looking for then they need to keep looking.  I find that most of my clients respect that and we have no problems.  The few that don't get what I call my "Come to Jesus" talk.  If they don't shape up after that, then I cut them loose.

Over the years, I've found that the biggest offenders of my personal and private boundaries are the agents - BA's as well as LA's.  They're the ones who seem to think that I am simply their "beck-n-call girl".  I have had to "train" far more agent to respect my personal and private boundaries than I have clients.

Donne, Of course the agents are the hard ones!  If the agent doesn't set personal boundaries for themselves, they're not going to set them for their associates either!  There are definite limits to how much we'll tolerate to get a check.

In general, 9 pm is the point at which we stop making or receiving calls, exception for negotiating contracts.  Other than that, there is rarely anything that can't wait until tomorrow if it's already waited that late.  We will do emails much later since they're not disruptive.

Anyone that thinks they're entitled to yell at us?  Probably not going to last long with us.  There are plenty of other agents willing to take the abuse, they can find them!  Another catch and release!

You never know when we might duck out for the evening.  We work very hard.  When we can get it together to go out to dinner & movie on a Tuesday, we go.  Cell phone left sitting on the coffee table.  Thoughts focused on the now.

My ofted repeated theory is that I might not always be a real estate broker, but I will ALWAYS be a wife, a Mom, a Grandmother, a daughter, a sister,..those enduring roles in my life deserve at least as much attention as my job.

We don't tend towards the spontaneous weeknight entertainment outside of "What's for dinner?"  or the Redbox DVD.  My version of cooking is  "Where do you want it from??".  Liz is a really good cook when our schedules permit!

Working from home might sound ideal, but it's a challenge sometimes! Having a 4 year old that wants Mommy all the time, it can be really hard to get any work done. We have come to an understanding, Mommy works in the mornings, and the afternoons belong to Barbies and the swimming pool. ;) We try to have a "big trip" one a week, like going to a new park or maybe a visit to the mall or the zoo. As for personal relaxation, I just picked up new running shoes and the Nike Plus system last night, YEA! So I can get back to my running routine, without my knee swelling up. (I was having an issue with my old shoes, they were causing"balloon-a-knee-a-titus). I'm waiting for Despicable Me and The Last Air-bender to come out on Redbox. The hubby and I watched Sherlock Holmes a couple of weeks ago for "date night", it was so good! But then I'm something of a Sherlock Holmes fanatic. ;)

Phly, Someone older than 4 distracts me if I try to work from home!  Hope your new running shoes work out!  One thing you'll never have to worry about me doing...I have ALWAYS hated running for sake of running!  Sounds like you've got a good system set up with your daughter!

Joan, We had fun!  Thanks!

I've always wondered why self-employed people have such a hard time creating time for their family and friends. To me it's always been the easiest thing in the world to do because I own the company.

I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT!

LOL

Unfortunately, way too many people go into business for themselves without a plan, and that includes a plan for their social lives.

Russel,

Sometimes we just have to set an appointment for ourselves to block the schedule.  There is a certain amount of freedom inherent to being your own boss, but we could just as well argue that we do have bosses, every one of our listings has hired us to sell their home, and part of our schedule is driven by what we need to do to support their needs also.

If you own you own business every potential, current, and past client is your boss.  Not to mention IRS, your Advertising, your bank, and anyone else you do business with.  When you think of it that way almost makes you want to go to work for someone else.  NO
