Blue Screen of Death | Windows 7 64 Bit Problems?

By
Real Estate Agent with Christie's International Real Estate

Hi Everybody Geek Dog,

Hope I don't get to Geeky for you here but this was a major problem for my PC yesterday and I wanted to share with my fellow A/R peeps and give a heads up.

This is for PC users only right now as far as I know. Not sure about Mac's using Windows.

Do you own a new computer with Windows 7 with the 64 bit operating system installed with it?

Do you have McAfee virus protection as well?

Have you noticed anything lately when you try to update your virus definitions?

Well apparently after much consternation and many phone calls to McAfee I found out that there is an ongoing problem with McAfee presently to their Internet Security Center updates and 64 bit Windows 7 operating systems.

Warning: Do not try to upload their updates or you will end up with this screen or something not quite as dramatic as this but still plenty scary..

They don't call it the blue screen of death for nothing....

blue screen of death

After McAfee updates your definitions it will bring you back into a loop and shut down your computer over and over. You have to stop this or it may ruin your system as it dumps all your memory cache each time.

Almost like a virus even though it's not.

What has to be done to prevent this and back up your system is to reboot and push th F8 key until you bring up your boot options.

Then start up in safe mode and do a system restore.

This must be done or you will keep crashing.

Restart again in Safe Mode  and uninstall the McAfee program so as to not keep updating the program as soon as you boot up.

McAfee told me they are working on this and will have a fix for it in about 2-3 weeks!

McAfee has not announced this anywhere that I have seen yet, so maybe I'm one of the first to experience this little issue.

So now I have no desktop with a Virus Scan enabled until McAfee engineers come up with a solution to their 64bit compatibility problems for Windows 7.

Just thought I'd pass that along.

Anybody else seen this happen to them yet?

Pretty frustrating, I'll tell ya...

Thanks for reading this. Hope I could help somebody out there.

Keep Safe out there everybody!

Uninstall MacAfee!

I have had Windows 7 64 bit for a year now, starting with the Release Candidate.

I dumped all the antivirus stuff that Dell loaded, and went with Microsoft Security Essentials.

MacAfee and Symantec are just too bloated, and MSE is Free.

Another reason I use Norton. Thanks for the heads up & I'll pass it along to others.  I now have a scanner that won't work with my new computer BTW.

Lyn - Yep I'm ready to go back to Norton as well bloated or not {Mike} I used to like McAfee but this has put me over the edge.... Norton never gave me these problems and always caught the bad guys before they got into my hd...

Michael
- It was actually me who posted but keep you laptop safe without the Windows 7 64 bit version for now say I...

Mike - I too have dumped all the preinstalled stuff from Dell.. Bloatware is not uncommon from them when you buy a puter from Dell.... MSE is a good alternative of course and thanks for adding that tip for us as well.

The scanner will work with W7 Professional, which has the ability to run XP-compatible devices in "Compatibility Mode."

Paul - The solution to it was about the processor I had in my computer which is an AMD Phenom that was causing the problems. I had to update the drivers for McAfee to fix this problem but it ended up taking about 3 months for them to fix it... Thank goodness it's working ok now..
