Where to buy or invest in Real Estate

So you've decided to invest in real estate, buy a new home. Where will you buy real estate?

If you are purchasing a home then the criteria can be relatively straight forward. How far are you willing to commute? Which highways or roadways offer you the best options and is public transportation a must or something that would provide an incentive for you?

For many years, I lived in Mattapan while working in Cambridge. The commute could be distinctly terrible if I worked a "typical" work day and used my car.  On the other hand, working off hours as I often did, my commute was a breeze much of the time!  Had I worked during the day on a regular basis, I'm not sure Mattapan would have been the correct place to live and I would have looked much closer at North Shore or the surrounding communities. Public transportation might have been an option in which case my location in Mattapan still wasn't optimal but could work.

Then a day arrived when I moved to Canton, Massachusetts and the commute from there was just as simple during the off hours but more complex if I worked normal business hours but there was one distinct improvement. I lived within walking distance of the purple line and could spend my commute time reading, writing or listening to music.

What considerations do YOU have when deciding where to live?

Absolutely true! The day I found my home in Millbury, MA, I had to pick my father up at Logan Airport and was running late. Millbury has always had an on-ramp to Route 90 a.ka. The Mass Turnpike which now extends directly to Logan but in the years just prior to my search for a home, a new ramp to the turnpike had been added on "my" side of town. I made it to the airport with time to spare (barely) and was so impressed by that fact that it actually affected my decision to buy that house!
