Tranquil Scenes Along Sacramento's American River

Berry Picking - August 2010
(Slide Show has 8 images)

It seems every few days or so, I feel compelled to blog about how fortunate I feel living in the Greater Sacramento Area.  We are rich in nature areas, wonderful attractions, activities, and events to keep an active mind inspired and satisfied.

This past weekend, I spent time with three of my granddaughters.  The agenda was to return to the American River Parkway, to catch a glimpse of the deer herd that dwells in a certain area of the 22 mile stretch along the American River, between Old Sacramento, and Folsom.  We also planned a little berry picking while we were at it.

However, the deer had chosen to be illusive this day.  They seem to be more visible in morning hours.  We had arrived mid-day.  Still, there was plenty to see and experience on this gorgeous summer day.

Summer weekends find the American River the equivalent of an aquatic freeway, populated with rafts, kayaks, and other raucous activity.

You may wonder about the grayish rock and gravel mountain, immediately behind the riverbank in the photo with the kayaks. The mountain is lingering evidence of gold dredging during the later days of the California Gold Rush.  There are many acres of old gold dredging sites like this, along the American River Parkway - especially between the Sacramento County cities of Rancho Cordova and Folsom.

You can click the American River Parkway website link, for more information about the facilities, parks, bike trails, and other amenities that make up the daisy chain of delightful nature areas along this Greater Sacramento treasure.

Richard - Thank you for your kind words.  We always manage to have a pretty good time when we are all together!  But you should see it when ALL the grandkids are home.  It's pure raw energy that bounces off the wall!

Bruce - The thing was that we wanted to see deer; but the deer weren't there that time of day.  We wanted to pick berries; but the best berries had been eaten by the deer. . .LOL

Hi Myrl...the Deer are never there when you want them. Speaking of Deer, the Municipality just redid our curbs and put in new lawn..this morning there where Deer tracks all threw the freshly seeded soil. I going to get up early and try for a photo shot tomorrow morning.

Aa always nice Photos Myrl :O))

Jeanean - You're very welcome. . .Thank you for visiting!

Steve - You've been a busy boy:-)

Fred - Those deer are usually out in the morning and evening.  During summer they often bunk down in the bushes and nap.  I love to see photos of the deer in your area.  Good luck capturing them.

Hi Myrl - Great slide show! You're making me miss my Grandkids. They live in Canada and won't visit Florida until late this year or early next. I'm not allowed any unsupervised visits because my Daughter says I warp their little minds - just kidding!!
