Cute, Smart or Dumb?

Real Estate Agent with McGraw Realtors

I'm going to state the obvious.  When you're in Real Estate, you must market yourself.  Okay.  We all know that, right?  Pretty basic.

But once you move from the basic truth, where do you go?  Yellow pages?  Nah.  The Internet?  Yes!  Blogging?  Of course.  Facebook and Twitter.  Yep.  Sometimes, our area, we see Real Estate folks putting their marketing on their vehicle.  That's because automobile marketing can be very affordable while bringing tons of exposure.

I pulled into a parking lot the other day and noticed that there was a Real Estate vehicle parked there.  The colors were good.  It caught my attention.  But so did something else...

That is getting to be a not quite so unusual find, Bob. And discount companies have their place. There are a certain number of consumers that always shop by price (Remember when FSBOs were really FSBOs?). There have always been a larger number of consumers who A)Didn't want to learn how to do real estate and so hired someone else, B)Learned the hard way and want full service this time, C)Got bad service and want to try something different.

If discount companies find a way to survive then that will become the norm and we'll all be working for less. If they don't, there will be fewer agents, and we will have a bigger share of the pie, each.

To answer your question, I think desperate best describes the agent.

I know I have not been around a long time, but is that even allowed?  I think publicly advertising commission rates is against board rules in Ohio anyway.  Who knows, I could be wrong, but it does seem a little desperate.

Bob - its out there, it will probably become a much bigger part of our business. We will have to learn to compete with it just like a few places can still compete with the big box stores.

If the discount model works and the agent makes money...I guess he is smart. It is not our business model but the playing field is open and level. May the best folks win :-)

Denise (and everybody) - I kind of wondered if advertising commission rates was against the rules too...

Hi Bob!
I wonder how the friends of this guy feels if they paid 6%.  Are they still friends? Also, this screams tacky!  I would never do!

Bob, I don't know if it's smart, but it's funny.  I'd like to ask this agent, if their next client pays 6% does that mean they're not their friend?

Bob, I suspect that all sellers considering listing with him will want to "friend" him.  My vote is dumb and tacky.

Ugh!  You should have keyed the car.  Dumb and tacky, it undermines the business.

I can get a cheap, discount hair cut or I can get a quality hair style. . . both businesses have their place and both have their own customers.  I think there is room enough for all and I don't feel threatened in any way by the discount realtors.

Susan - I don't feel threatened by the guy...just put out.  I want the advertising to be against the rules.  But I don't think it is...

Bob -  Maybe 'threatened' is too strong a word for this instance but it has certainly struck a nerve.  If his method of advertising works for him, then he is smart.  If it gets him noticed, he's smart.  There are too many Realtors who think 24hr advertising is beneath them.  And so be it -  the beauty is we all do what works best for us and our own market. We're not going to please everyone.  As #7 said, it got you to write about him.
