National Hockey Center at Saint Cloud State University
Built in 1989, and located right next door to Husky Stadium, the National Hockey Center is home to 2 olympic size hockey rinks. It is no surprise, as if you know Minnesota, you know how much we love our Hockey.
The National Hockey Center is an impressive 138,000 square feet in size and according to the Saint Cloud State University website each sheet of ice is 200 x 100 in size. This is home to Huskey Hockey; and Huskey Hockey is Division 1 hockey at its finest. St. Cloud State University Athletics is proud to have such well accomplished men's and women's hockey teams.
The students at Saint Cloud State University are notorious for their support of the teams. The "Dogg Pound", the student seating section in the stadium, has had a very positive effect on the players. Shane Connelly, from rival University of Wisconsin is credited with remarking: "They keep it going the entire game, (Friday) night I maybe found myself distracted and a little off my game, and that's what a good student section can do." The WCHA (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) teams who come to St. Cloud know that they will have to concentrate to play well here. The WCHA includes some of the best hockey programs in the world.
Beginning in 2011 the National Hockey Center will undergo a complete renovation. The proposed 30 million dollar project is currently being funded by 6.5 million from the state of Minnesota and another 23 million from private sponsors and naming rights. This renovation project will convert the National Hockey Center into a multi-purpose event center and will be able to seat 8,000 for concerts. There are plans to include 20-30 luxury suites included in the proposed renovations. Contact Sara Granheim at 320-308-2073 for more information on the NHEC project.
Division 1 Huskey Hockey at the St. Cloud State University National Hockey Center, is a wonderful reason to love living in Saint Cloud MN.
