Water/Water/Water/Water - Protect Your Kids From Heat Stroke
I was speaking to my neighbor yesterday about school starting and how her kid got Heat Stoke. She said that the kids have already gone back to begin practicing for their sports. Many schools are starting earlier this summer to get the kids use to the heat. A number of kids have spent their summer indoors because it just too hot or parents feel they need to protect them from the sun.
Rightly they should but now that school related events such as band, sports, cheerleading and other activities are getting underway, be sure to keep your kids hydrated but mostly continue to remind them and teach them the signs, especially teens, over and over that they need water.
As it turns out my friend's kid played soccer with some of her team, practicing for the upcoming season. They were out having a good time and had only been out about an hour. But next thing you know, she wasn't feeling so good, got dizzy and felt ill. She suffered a heat stroke and it's taken about a week for her to recover.
The thing is it comes from out of nowhere and kids aren't or don't know to pay attention. So, please, before you let you kids out during this hot, hot season, make sure they have water and/or some good hydration foods like cut up oranges and to drink/eat often during their workout. Educate them on prevention and what to do just in case. Below is a link to guidelines for being in the heat. Stay Safe.
