Kim also talked about an opportunity to purchase $65-$100 worth of food for $30 called the "Treasure Box"  (www.TheTreasureBox.org).  Each box contains enough food for a family of four for 1 week.

There are different options available.  This can be a good hands on project that requires about 1 hr/month to take orders and 11/2 hours to deliver the food.  The club just serves as a conduit for the food source and the the meals are paid for by the recipients.

Pam Dunn announced our nominee for the Rotary Business Person of the Year.  Paul Hudson will represent our club.

Pam also announced an opportunity for us to help pick oranges to donate to a worthy cause on August 21st at 10 AM at the home of Lorna Ross on Loma Street.  We need at least 10 people to help pick the oranges and deliver them to the Share Our Selves(SOS) Charity in Costa Mesa.

Pam has sent out an email about this. Contact Pam for more information.

Greg Mills introduced a 5th area of Service for Rotary.  This new area is called New Generations and involves our youth programs, i.e, Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange and RYLA.  We will have to amend the club's constitution to define this new focus.  In the coming weeks we will select a chairperson to coordinate our New Generation Committee.

Bryan Nash gave an update on the Fall Festival scheduled for Thursday October 7th from 6-9 PM.  The evening will include a sit-down dinner including wine at the tables.  Entertainment will be provided by the band Instant Replay and our auctioneer will be Charles Dreyer, who will donate his services for the evening.  Club members have the option of donating $250 worth of merchandise or services or just donating $250 that will go towards prize bags that will be sold at the event.  A sign up sheet was sent around for volunteer positions on the evening of the event. Contact Bryan for more information.

Speaker:  The Honorable JIm Smith

O.C. Superior Court Judge, Ret

Retired Judge Jim Smith gave us a humorous look at his 27 year career on the bench.

He is a native Californian, raised in Burbank and apparently he and Joe Brand attended

different high schools, but knew the same girl.  The judge went on to attend the University of Redlands and went on to study law at Hastings School of Law.  In 1962 he began his career as an assistant district attorney. Going on from their to have a private law practice.  At age 34 he became the youngest judge appointed to the Municipal Court by then Governor Ronald Reagan.  He later successfully ran for O.C. Superior Court and served in that position for 27 years.   He recounted some of his experiences and says he never had a bad day or regretted his decision to become a judge.  Now in retirement he serves as an arbitration specialist.  The judge has run in every LA Marathon since its inception and he feels that running has been  great therapy in helping him to clear his head and stay focused.  There were many humorous moments and lots of smiling faces during his presentation.
