After a nice weekend away from home, I had no problem sitting down with my daughter last night to watch a little of 'her' television. Although I believe kids watch too much TV now a days, there are some times that I really don't mind the silly, mind-numbing sitcoms that she watches... Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place. I remember as a kid the stuff I watched that I'm sure our parents thought was silly and mind-numbing.... Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeannie, Hogan's Heroes....
She asked me to go in and find a show, she'd be in in a minute. I think she was expecting one of her typical shows but I decided to take a different route and see what the result would be. (Always looking for a chance to take an adventure!) I put on a show called Globe Trekker which certainly tweaked my interest! I turned it on in the middle of the show while Ian Wright was on his way up to get a good look at Mt. Everest. When my daughter came back in the room.... to my surprise... it tweaked her interest too!
We ended up watching the rest of the episode without any complaints and we talked about what we were watching (her biggest question was about the camera man!). We learned about altitude sickness and how to treat it, we saw beautiful views of the Himalayas as Ian walked along the Himalayan Highway, we saw Yaks crossing over rope bridges along the highway and at the end, Ian visited an area of Nepal seldom visited by tourists where he participated in a wedding between five grooms and one bride. (My daughter had a few questions about that one!).
I love seeing different sides of my daughter and those moments watching Nepal where both bonding and mind opening. Now the question.... where do we travel to next?
