ALLSTATE HOSTS FAMILY DRIVING CHALLENGE
at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds AL
Some Birmingham area teens and parents gathered at the Barber Motorsports Park this afternoon to participate in a public awareness campaign designed to educate drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. In this day of cell phones and iPods, all ages are multi-tasking behind the wheel of a vehicle......and causing lots of accidents!
Allstate Insurance is hosting the Family Driving Challenge in 38 cities across the country to help drivers see how quickly an accident can happen and raise awareness to make our roads safer for everyone.
Professional driving instructors take teen-parent teams on an obstacle course, distracting them with eating and drinking, phone calls, texting and even rowdy passengers. The more distractions the drivers have to deal with, the more trouble they have staying on the course and avoiding the obstacles.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration show that distracted driving attributed to nearly 6,000 fatalities in 2008 and 25% of crashes. Vehicle accidents continue to be the number one killer of teens in America and drivers under the age of 20 made up the highest percentage of fatal accidents related to distracted driving.
Although teens are at higher risk, even more experienced drivers are likely to cause a crash when they are not paying attention. It is important for parents to set a good example for their kids.....a survey of teens revealed that 90% said parents were the biggest influence on their driving habits!
Buckle up, put down those cell phones and BE SAFE!
