North Seattle Neighborhoods: Greenwood

This neighborhood is near and dear to my heart.  It's where I grew up.  I attended Viewlands Elementary School (now closed) and remember walking to first grade during the 1965 earthquake that toppled part of the sign for Art's grocery store (now QFC). 

Greenwood's boundaries are Aurora Avenue N. (highway 99) to the east; North 105th Street/Holman Road to the north; 8th Avenue Northwest to the west and North 80th Street to the south.

Greenwood was originally named Woodland, and the name changed to Greenwood in 1907.

This neighborhood has two nice parks: Greenwood Park on the east side of Greenwood Avenue and Sandel Park on the west side.

Greenwood hosts an art walk every second Friday of the month from 6pm to 9pm.  On the last Saturday in June, the "Greenwood Classic Car Show" is held.  This event has been going on for over 15 years.  And Greenwood is also one of the few neighborhoods that boasts a Seafair Parade, usually held in late July.

Northwest of Greenwood and 85th, Fred Meyer sits on a peat bog.  There is a lot of news about this particular peat bog right now and actually there are 26 peat bog locations in Seattle.  These areas tend to settle when groundwater is pushed out of the bog.  The City of Seattle monitors these environmentally critical areas.

The business district is an eclectic mix of merchants and many of the brick storefronts look as they did in the 1920s.  I love the new stores blending with the old.  There is a little bit of something for everyone.
Businesses range from antiques and comic book shoppes, to a florist and a few restaurants.  (Olive You is underway to re-open as "Olive & Grape").  There are about three coffee shops in just two blocks -- this is Seattle, you know!  One is "Sip, Ship and Shop" with some fun Greenwood items for sale.   There is also a colorful Buddhist Temple on 83rd and 1st.

Homes vary from ramblers and Tudors to split-levels and bungalows.  Recently two bedroom homes have been selling from $245,000 to $333,000; three bedrooms from $259,000 to $436,000; and four bedrooms from $370,000 to $575,000.
