August 2010 events at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston Maine.

FAHCIf you have not yet visited Lewiston's Franco-American Heritage Center, you will want to make a point of stopping by.  The beauty of the building alone is worth your visit.  In addition, the center offers a never ending array of cultural events for the community.

When the building, located at 46 Cedar Street in Lewiston, was no longer going to be used as a church in 2000, it was turned over to a local community group and the Franco-American Heritage Center was born.  A corner stone of the community, the center provides entertainment and events in keeping with it's mission:

"The mission of the Franco-American Heritage Center is to celebrate and preserve the Franco-American heritage while welcoming the cultures of our neighbors."

Here is the schedule for August:   For more details visit the Franco-American Heritage Center website.

FAHCAugust 21, 2010 7:30pm  Chinese Folk Art Ensemble

Joelle MorrisAugust 28, 2010 7:30pm  Joelle Morris in Concert

Joelle is an accomplished mezzo-soprano known for her dramatic voice and passion.  The FAHC had this to say about this exciting performer, "From opera's darkest arias to jazz's most memorable tunes to Broadway's greatest hits, Morris controls the power of her voice while finding subtleties within her songs."

FAHCAugust 31, 2010 7:30  Celtic Tuesdays with Vishten

New-traditional Acadian music:  Made up of third generation Acadians living separate but paralell musical experiences, twin sisters Pastelle and Emmanuelle LeBlanc from Prince Edward Island, Canada have teamed up with Pascal Miousse and Louis-Charles Vigneau from the nearby Magdelene Islands to create a sound that incorporates elements of the new ways while retaining and staying true to the essential Acadian spirit of their roots.

There is just no end in sight.  In the current economy, people here are turning closer to home for entertainment.

Kristen,

A very nice Localism post.  I'll bet the Chinese Folk Art Ensemble is something to hear with the 30 member Children's troupe!

Jay:  The building is even more impressive close up.  It is just over the Bernard Lown Peace Bridge from Auburn and surprises most people driving by.

I must be dense today, but it took me a while to get the spaghettios comment. :)

Dorie:  Thank you.  Yes,  I'm looking forward to the show.

Charles:  Thank you.  Time for you to consider coming back to Maine with your Dad?

It is gorgeous!  It took from 1908 until 1928 to complete and is built out of Maine granite.
