While running thru my workout this morning at my Curves, I saw they had posted a notice on on of the boards for all of us to see.

Ramona Elementary School in Hemet, CA is asking for donations of the following items:

500 boxes of #2 pencils (1box=144 pencils)

2200 boxes of Crayola Crayons (16 crayons per box)

150 packages of dry erase markers (10 per pkg)

175 packages of dry erase markers (6 per pkg)

500 reams of notebook paper

I think it is a great thing to get the community involved, but what happened, first of all, to giving parents a list of items for their child to bring to school.

Second of all, where is all the federal school funding.  Oh, wait!  I remember.....we are giving it all to the politicians.  In fact, for those of you outside California, we are having quite a debacle over the city of Bell, CA where the city manager of a city of 37,000 population (yep--that's all) was making a fat handsome salary of over $800K per year, and his assistant was making over $400K, and the list goes on.

Bet those kids in Bell have NO money for school supplies.

So, in the interest of making sure our children are educated, I am going to do my part and donate what I can on this list and hopefully through the goodness of the hearts of others, Ramona Elementary School in Hemet California will have all the supplies they need for the 2010-11 school year.

This infuriates me. Not that the school is asking for the community assistance in obtaining their much needed supplies, but the fact THEY HAVE TO ASK THE COMMUNITY for assistance! What happened to the California State Lottery that was to help the schools? We can have a 20 million dollar or more lottery prize but the students in our local communities need pencils. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??

Don't EVEN get me started on the dude in Bell.....

I know that everyone in the community will help the Ramona Elementary School get their needed supplies and are to be commended for taking care of their own.

Stephanie, I totally FORGOT about that wonderful California Lottery......I wonder where all that money goes.  Yeah, don't get me started on that issue.  People can win more money than they EVEN know how to handle, but the schools need donations.  Go figure.

Oh my gosh!  You have opened a HUGE can of worms here, Jean.

How about here in Garfield Heights, Ohio (outside of Cleveland) where we have to pay the following for our students:

  • $50 per child registered to attend a GH public school
  • $165 for our middle school child to play football (it goes up to $300 when he enters high school)
  • $75 each for two of our children to play in the band
  • $300 for our high school child to play baseball
  • $75 for our daughter in kindergarten to be on the cheerleading squad

This on top of our property taxes increasing every year.  This on top of the multi-million dollar lottery games held here.  This on top of the federal funding that was recently granted to the school district.  This on top of the list of school supplies we receive each year for each grade level that we MUST bring in or the child gets penalized.

Don't EVEN get me started!

By the way, did I mention that we have SIX kids??  Only 4 of them are in school this year but next year, all 6 will be in school.  That's $300 in school fees on top of everything else.  Unbelieveable!
