The Art Of Putzing

By

Today is just one of those days. The sun is gloriously streaming down from a perfectly blue summer sky, a light breeze wafts along carrying with it the song of a bird and the scent of freshly mown green grass combined perfectly with that of grilling burgers. It's the epitome of the perfect lazy summer day. *sigh*

And yet here I sit, in my remarkably uncomfortable, standard issue office chair alternating between gazing longingly out my window at the summer slipping by. . . and typing like a woman possessed so I can get out of here and properly putz!

Ah! The long lost art of putzing! What's that you say? YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS??? *gasp*

My friend, let me educate you!

PUTZING: (putt-zing) -

1. The long lost art of saying "to heck with it" and enjoying whatever comes your way.

2. The art of loafing around and generally having an remarkably good time, while doing mostly nothing.

3. A more negative connotation indicating laziness or sloth. . . ignore this one

The point of putzing? Once your work is done, let it go! Look, there it goes!. . . And now it's gone, beyond any hope of calling it back or renewing it or reviving it or chasing it down! So just let it go! That's right. . .

Let it go baby!

You know what they say. . . .  Work hard and play harder!  Once the hard work is done, the great ones party! So get your work done, and then putz or play to your hearts content. Just remember to work first! ;)

Phly,

I hear you, just came back from a full out half plus day of putzing.  We finally have sun and warmth, and I intend to bask in it.  Happy Putzing!

Hi Phly,  Entertaining post.  My mom used that term all the time - sometimes because we forgot the " work first " thing !

Ron & Alexandra - Thanks! ;) I'm about to flee the office and go putz with my little girl. I'm thinking the pool would be a great place for that!

Get out and putz Phly! Whatever you're doing can wait.....unless of course you're writing me a check. Then by all means finish up first! Then get out and putz!

Phly,

I love putzing around. Sometimes while I putz, I find something more important to do....so putzing around is necessary, when there's nothing to do....I hope I can putz later today!!

Phly,

Putz away happily. Very glad to hear that you know you can do it! It's re-energizing...and I'll bet your little girl appreciates it, too. Are you gonna teach her that word...lol?

Craig - LOL! I'm all finished putzing now. . . but man, was it ever fun! Putzing is especially important when kids are involved, they don't stay little forever and there is nothing better for bonding that a good round of putzing. ;)

Deborah - Thanks! ;) And you are so right! The art of putzing is all about balance. You can't really putz when you have things preying on your mind because you have left them undone. Once the important things are done then feel free to putz away, it's good for the soul and your sanity. ;)

Michael - Go on out there and get your putz on! ;) If someone is ever foolish enough to tell you that they don't like putzing, it's because they don't do it properly.

Lisa - My little girl is a conversational wonder, (Honest! I mean when was the last time you heard a 4 year old use the word inadvertently? and in proper context too!. . . It can be slightly disconcerting to people that don't know her.) but putz happens to be a favorite of hers. I asked her just this morning what she was doing, and she replied "I'm just putzing around my room Mommy." . . . hence the post on the art of putzing. ;)

Steve - LOL! Actually that particular photo was take at Kitty Hawk in North Carolina. I was there one summer and some pre-teen girls were braving the waves on boogie boards. It was just too perfect a photo op to pass up! ;)

I'd be a little careful about the use of the term "putzing".  It may not mean quite what you think it means.

Phly....Very funny post.  I love "putzing" but I agree that to enjoy it you need to complete your work first.

Alan - Oh, ACK! Interesting. . . I just looked it up according to an online dictionary and I can honestly say that in all my 26 years I had never heard other definition listed there! I learned the term from my very proper Grandmothers, one being a British-Canadian Historian, and the other a born and bred Southern Belle. However, I think that it only applies in that connotation if you are speaking Yiddish. . . according to Wikipedia anyway!. ;) Thanks for letting me know though!

Phly - it is of Yiddish derivation, but it has wide usage in the U.S. with that genral meaning... so I'd just make sure that your use of it is clearly understood.
