Whatever its size, any kitchen can feel more spacious and function better using these simple tips:
- Paint walls and cabinets a similar color. This makes the the separation appear seamless and allows the eye to travel freely across the room.
- Clear out unnecessary items. Clutter can make even a large room feel tight. Choose the two small appliances you use most (toaster and espresso machine at my house!) to leave on the counter and put the rest away in cabinets or the pantry. A basket on top of the fridge can neatly contain bags of snack foods and chips.
- Take advantage of vertical space. Use a pot rack to keep things like utensils and pots handy and off the counters. If your cabinets don't reach the ceiling, use this area to store decorative serving dishes.
- Expand your view. Cover your backsplash in light reflective - even mirrored - tiles to make the room feel bigger and brighter. If your kitchen lacks a window, hang a bright painting or mirror in a beautiful frame to add color and interest.
- See through. Replace solid upper-cabinet doors with glass panels; even clutter-hiding frosted glass will add brightness. You can purchase new cabinet doors or take your existing ones to a carpenter who can router out space to add the glass panels.
- Get comfortable. People tend to gather in the kitchen, whether they're helping with the cooking or not. Add a seating area at the counter or in an unused corner so visitors can hang out without getting underfoot.
