The blistering sun beats down on us today here in San Gabriel Valley, CA. Would you believe it is over 100° and more of the same tomorrow ? Really it is too hot to be outdoors.
Extremely high temperatures calls for common sense knowing when to keep out of it because heat related illnesses can cause complications for the elderly, the very young, and for that matter everyone else in between! Over exposurer to the sun could result in a heat stroke. Problems that may not appear until years after the damage is done are things like skin cancer, damage to the eyes, and the immune system.
So here are a few thing you can do to protect yourself from extremely hot weather:
- Limit your outdoor activities during the hours of 10:00 a.m. - 4: p.m.
- Wear wrap-around sunglasses that provide 90 to 100 percent UVA and UVB protection
- Use and reapply every two hours a good sun screen
- Never fall asleep in the sun
- Keep hydrated, drink plenty of water
- Keep the AC at 78°
- Stay in doors — at home, cooling station, the mall, or a library
- Bring pets inside DO NOT leave them in the garage
Here is a fact, the highest temperature ever recorded in the United States was 134° reported on July 10, 1913 in Death Vally, CA.
We are sizzling, can it get any hotter? I certainly hope not.
