Twittter is So Over

By

Twitter is so over."  Or at least that's what I over heard today in my local Barnes & Noble store

I had stopped by to pick up a copy of Seth Godin's Purple Cow (recommended here on AR) and was standing at the information desk next to two college age girls.  They were talking, as college age girls do, and the subject of Twitter came up.

"Yeah, I was on Twitter for about five months but am so over it now."

"Really?  I don't even have an account."

"It was just something to do.  Seriously, Twitter is so over."

She got bored, she quit and now she is on to something else.

It got me to thinking.  Is this a trend?  Is Twitter falling by the wayside?  Is Twitter "so over"? Or is it just this demographic?  (Do they even have a name yet?)

In the interest of full disclosure, I have a Twitter account but between answering the phone, answering emails, texting, blogging, and, oh yes, working with clients, tweeting does not rank high on my to do list.

Just wondering  . . . is Twitter so over?

Michael  If it is over I'm glad I didn't waste the time getting started.  I find Facebook much more interesting and a fast communicator

Twitter, like Facebook and all other social media outlets have their best use. It's definitely NOT over in my opinion, but it really just depends on what you do with it.  For RE purposes, I get very valuable information about, guess what? .... local events, news, trends, businesses.. things that definitely impact the real estate in this area.  If you simply create an account and follow every person in the universe, it becomes a nuisance and it can be over for you very quickly.

My point is, simply, let's learn to use these new tools that provide newer ways for us to be connected to information intelligently.  The reason they are so relevant nowadays is because they're not just a fad, but have somehow have found ways to change the way information is disseminated.

College girls might just have different priorities in life at this point in their lives, you know? :-)

Not sure about twitter. I never got into it myself.

However, you will love The Purple Cow. All Seth Godin books rock!

Don't stop with the Purple Cow, he has many better ones on the book shelf at the local book store.

I think that Twitter has many more capabilities to reach people that you would never have met however I am just now learning how to best use it for increasing my business and creating a fan base. P.S. I love Seth Godin!!!

Hi Michael.  I actually don't think Twitter was ever here...

It was "the next" facebook...

But why do we need the next when facebook is still alive and kicking?

A lot of tech guys will tell you how great it is, but unless you are Ashton Kuchar, I don't believe them...

Thanks for writing,

Ken

I am starting to believe that Twitter is just another Social Ambiance. It's merely a way for people to try and cloud their profiles with a barrage of advertisements. Just look at the postings from your followers and the people you follow. It's 100% advertisement. Rarely do you ever just see people chatting! Sad.

Twitter is far from over as far as I am concerned.  I use it daily and have a nice following.  The key is consistency.

The simple way to detect a new trend is to borrow my teenage daughter for a day. She and her girlfriends find emerging trends about 5,000% better than any market analysis group on wall street.

The use the trend until the 'normals' or 'old folks' discover it and then 'its on to the next'...

They feel twitter is dead or dying...

yeah facebook is fast enough that I facebooked a client whose number I didn't have and they responded in time for me to push our meeting back 15 minutes. It was crazy.

Hi Michael - I think Twitter still has plenty of use, but only as one small part of our overall online presence. Just a couple of days ago I received a direct message from someone looking for a home. That being said, blogging (and a little Facebook) still bring the most of my leads.

Thanks for the comments.  I just spent about 20 minutes doing short responses to everyone and then accidentally deleted it.  Not sure I'm going back . . . Apologies.

Hi Michael,

With still growing numbers it is hardly over, but I can see how Twitter will be a thing of the past and for the fanatics when the dust settles, we onlyuse it to drive people eslewhere, if that is the way of stating it, but personally we do not use it for personal use.

Tweet tweet out

Never twittered but I am very web and media oriented.  I think that you can spread yourself too thin with all of the communication outlets so I stick with my tried and true ones.  I am open to new ideas and change, but I never was interested in the twitter concept.  So, is is "OVER"?  Don't know but I am not joining.

I consider myself average ... I guess everyone does! I never got excited about twitter. I usually adopt a technology once I realize its application for my business. No one ever demonstrated twitter to me as a must have.
