Laurie Manny passes away suddenly....My sadness of a Mentor and a Dear friends taught me so much

Real Estate Agent with eXp Realty SL # 3014652

I just woke up to find out of the passing of Laurie Manny -Long Beach Realtor.  Many of you probably do not know who she was but since I became a member of Activerain way back in 2006...what I call the beginning ...I had the privilege to know her. Although we never got to meet in person...we talked extensively for hours on the phone.

Considered by many as the "Blogging Queen"...Laurie was one of the founding members on this network and a pioneer of social media for many Realtors.

Who would have thought that I or anyone else would hear the words 'Laurie Manny Dies"  But I'm glad that I was a part of what she was doing and also a part of her life.

In the early days on the network..Laurie was one of the first moderators here....she was a teacher...a mentor and a friend to me. She volunteered countless hours of her own time to help me with my blog. She took her free time spending countless hours..sometimes in the middle of the night.... going through many posts to make sure she picked the best to be featured here. She always told me she wasn't perfect and seemed disappointed at times when people would complain about not getting on the dashboard. I think she was insulted to hear she sometimes had to play the bad guy. It was a hard job and I'm glad I never took that job.

I was very surprised to hear the news of her sudden passing.  The first time Laurie called me I was totally surprised and even complimented. I was like"oh no..that bitch is calling me?" " What did I do wrong?" I was even a bit nervous that she was just calling to lam bast me but she really was a sweat heart...boy the stories I could tell you. Laurie was just the opposite...she was a sweat heart....helpful to me..she was my mentor here and will surely be missed.

She was very well respected by many here. I remember the old days on this network and all the stories and all the debating...the bitching...the moaning that would go on...I LOVED IT!...I could go on and on and I'm sure you'll be hearing more and more about her in the upcoming days..but today we grieve her loss.

Moderating here in the early days was a tough had to put up with threats from other members...vulgar comments...she would tell me that people would bother her all times of the night. Some really thought she was mean...well she wasn't..she was one of the kindest people I knew here so we should all be grateful.

If you think there is controversy on Activerain couldn't even compete with Laurie. She knew what she was doing and she did it well.

Laurie wasn't one to keep her views to herself..she told it like it is and just as I do..that's why we got a long so well.

To my surprise..the call was a very friendly call. She started by asking me a little about my life and I started to warm up to her more and more and would ask her about her life as well. We talked about meeting one day but that day never happened. I guess with travel and her and I being across the country from each other made it difficult.

Over the last year...we didn't keep in as much contact as we used to but we would comment back and forth on Facebook. I was in total shock to hear the news...

It's a bitter sweat day as I just returned from Rain Camp in Orlando and I was thinking of Laurie at the time so this was a shock today.

If you are interested in leanring more about can read all her blog posts >>HERE

Thank you for mentoring me ...Keep making it happen in heaven my friend..Rest in Peace LAURIE MANNY

I'm so sorry.....I barely remember the picture and name, but this outpouring of love and emotion in both the post and comments, really shows how close the AR community is. Clearly she is going to be missed!

My prayers are with all who loved, respected and will miss Laurie.  I've found our online friends can be missed as much as "real" friends.

What a beautiful tribute! I did not know Laurie but feel that I have truly missed out on a wonderful relationship. In this time of termoil in the country with people out of work, loosing their homes and just plain hardships it is good to know that one person could leave such a positive mark on so many. I am looking forward to reading her blogs. My thoughts go out to all of the friends she left behind and to her family. I have a feeling that as long as AR is alive, so too, will Laurie Manny!

Neal- as one of the early signer oners to Active Rain I could not agree more.  After meeting Laurie at the CAR convention last year she is exactly like I knew she would be a Sweet Heart who had NO ISSUE with teling it like she saw it.  Like it or not you got  her opinion!

I'm so sad to hear she was alone.  WOW - life is so fragile.

She had been helping me with some SEO stuff, you're right she was one of the first that embraced the Hyper-Local blog and boy did she succeed.

She will be missed.

Like everybody else, I was shocked to hear of Laurie's passing. I didn't know her IRL, but she was a Facebook friend who I was just beginning to realize was very inspiring. Please accept my deepest condolences to all of you, her friends.

My thoughts are this ... Social media, the very thing that Laurie embraced so whole-heartedly, is responsible for many of these amazing friendships today. Ten years ago, none of us could have fathomed that so many people who have never met each other, would be so deeply impacted by a treasured friend's passing. Social Media is a true gift of community, to us personally and to our profession. That is what Laurie believed and that is what your tribute reflects, Neal. Your heart is all over this lovely piece.

I hope that you guys who are "old-timers" here will take Laurie's example to heart and consider mentoring the newbies in true Laurie fashion.  In this way, what she believed in so passionately will stay alive and well in Active Rain.

Prayers that all hearts are soothed today.

Unfortunately, all I can say, "wow" and am in shock.  I had spoken to Laurie about 2 weeks ago, which she was kind enough to have invited me to write a follow-up blog to one of her current blogs to share some business together.  I learned a lot about blogging, seo and the internet in general from her.  Your tribute was "right on" about her.  She was a tough cookie with a big heart.  We initially had met almost a year ago, which one of my clients was purchasing one of her listings.  We shared a lot of the same thoughts on business, and it was certainly a pleasure to speak with her, as she really knew her stuff.  RIP, The Queen of Long Beach!!!!  Thank you for you tribute.  It's certainly very nice to see so many nice comments left about her memories.

When I saw her name I knew who she was.  Though I didn't know her personally, I feel the loss.  I learned a great deal from her as well.  I feel stunned right now.  I feel like I should pay more attention and connect better with folks I've come to know online.  While I have met a few of my Active Rain members, I am somewhat shy and like you, I would have wondered "what's she calling me for?"  just like you did.

What a beautiful tribute this is that she has left a legacy of writings that others can still appreciate and learn from.  The memories of her peers and the love and respect that was/IS felt towards her.  Even in her passing she has taught us the power in our connection through social media.  Though I did not meet her or even talk to her on the phone or even email.  Her life affected mine and others.  We all do this.  Even if we don't realize it.

According to reports I'm hearing..she was having salmonella like symptoms for about a week according to a thread she wrote on Facebook...Laurie did not have health insurance. But until there is an official autopsy report..I'd rather not speculate. It's a shame that it had to come to this..let us give her peace now.

Neal, what a beautiful tribute.  How sweet, you sent Laurie an email to let her know she'd be missed.  Those are just the types of friendships that are born here on AR.  I never got to talk to Laurie, but did have a tremendous amount of respect for her...always will.

Neal, had not seen this wonderful tribute to Laurie until just now. Until her passing, I had no idea she was part of the bedrock of Active Rain but I am not surprised.

I happened to catch a teaching via streaming video at a RebarCamp and it was so powerful that I have never forgotten what she said. Of all the video/webinars I have attended, I can pick out more single tips from hers than any of the others. Her personna shone through on the screen. I started reading her Long Beach blog and just following her in general.

I remember the conversation she was having with Sally Cheeseman and someone else on FB about her new camera about a week before she died. The woman made an impact wherever she was, what a dynamo and I'm sure she would have been at the leading edge of whatever new direction social media will be heading in the future. What a treasure to have known her!
