STOP PROMOTING YOURSELF ON MY FACEBOOK WALL!

By
Real Estate Agent with Coastal Real Estate - Cape Coral FL SL3150658

STOP PROMOTING YOURSELF ON MY FACEBOOK WALL!  Come on people (those of you that are guilty of what I am posting will recognize yourself) let's be professionals and treat others as we want to be treated.

I have mainly used Facebook as a way to stay in touch with family and friends but have been getting more interested in trying to use it as a way to build business as well.  I attended RainCamp in Orlando this week and learned a great deal about this topic as well as things to look for.

After leaving RainCamp I decided to really look closely at my Facebook page and guess what I found - a local real estate agent that was my "friend" had just posted one of her listings along with 10 pictures of the home.  She went even further by posting a "mini resume" proclaiming how she is the greatest real estate agent in Lee County, FL.

I continued to look at other postings on my wall and so far I have "unfriended" 3 people.  If you want to be my friend that is great but if you are looking to promote yourself don't even bother sending me a friend request.  I won't promote myself on your wall so please don't promote yourself on my wall.  Anyone that reads this and is guilty of this please STOP PROMOTING YOURSELF ON MY FACEBOOK WALL!

You Deserve a Full-Time Agent, Not Reduced Results

I have FaceBook friends in other market areas, but not in mine. To easy for them to hit the button on Realtor.com or other sites to promote THEIR listings on my pages. I have warned about this several times in the past on AR, but no one seemed to notice this issue. And with everyone screaming that if you did not Twitter or use FaceBook you were done for and your career was over. In our office, all of the agents are on each others pages. But they do not know how to post or to 'share' from other sites. The one that does posted over 50 of his/her listings on a colleague's site.

So if you are in Hoboken, glad to have you as a friend. Zephyrhills, we can be friends in the local Chilis, but not on FaceBook.

And in the end, for all the hoopla, no one is going to get rich by using FaceBook for real estate business.

This is a great reminder that we do need to police our onlince presence. I'm doing the IMSD designation now and they have us doing a lot with Facebook and Twitter.

I don't have this problem because the only people on my Facebook are my real friends. I just don't use Facebook for business....not everything in my life needs to be about business.

For me Facebook is a personal site to connect with family and friends with whom I have lost touch will. I also make new friends. I don't advertise that I am an agent but anyone who reads my profile knows it and it states that I am open to questions if anyone has any. Another intersting note about the younger generation and Facebook, is that many use it as a way of expressing their anger or distrust towards a person. I have had a posts from some that I wondered if they stopped to think about what they wrote.

Hi Terry, my sentiments exactly. Do not advertise on my facebook page. Reading all of the comments has eased my mind a bit. Thanks for sharing.

I think its okay to post info on your stream.  I have a fan page and do most of my real estate on that page.  If something is interesting and helpful I also post it on my own wall.

Terry, I agree with lenn. I don't really use it for business but I do have a feed from AR over to my Fan page.

Other agents in the area have been surprised when I won't accept their "friend" requests.  This is exactly the reason why.  Great post.

Hi Terry, That drives me insane! I don't know if it's intentional or automatic, but it is certainly inconsiderate.... unfriend is my friend :) jay

I never really thought about the consequences of automatic feed.... I better make sure I'm not doing this inadvertently.

I have to admit, I have posted a listing once.  After doing so, I felt it was really inconsiderate and haven't done it again.

Well, I have over 3,700 friends on FB. I have everyone in a list or two, (family, Arabian horse friends, artist friends, dressage friends, local friends, church friends, etc,) so their posts and mine show up where they are needed most. Now, I know having that many "friends" may sound incredible; but I attended RainCamp Bellingham and learned the value of my network of Facebook friends and fans. Seriously, RainCamp was the best learning dollar I've ever spent.

Facebook is very flexible. You may climb the hill, and let your light shine forth, or, you may rest along the path circling the hill, and walk on later. There are always more welcome friends to find along the way. I seem to find wonderful new friends whatever direction I'm going!

This is a reason why we need to be cautious about who we accept as friends on Facebook. I really do not like to take on anyone who has a political agenda, for example, particularly when their politics are the opposite of mine. I accidentally, had someone who was spewing a right-wing agenda on my wall every day.  I remedied that situation by "unfriending" her.

I don't use facebook that often and when I do, try to make it more personal rather than biz.  I think what you're mentioning is their feed (like a blog roll) rather than them posting on your wall.  Posting on your wall would be really bad.

But if they are just posting on your feed, your friends are not seeing it, so it's not doing you any harm.

That aside, I do find it really annoying and in poor taste if all people are doing is showing their listings.  Just doesn't seem like the right forum on facebook.

LOL!  I repeat what someone said WAY up the line... folks ought to at least scan the responses before posting!  Otherwise they are going to "delete" and "unfriend" themselves right out of friends and contacts they shouldn't have...

I understand how someone could send a feed automatically that would show up in your news feed but to have it directly on your profile page is a different issue entirely. I would have to agree with #8.

I've been at Facebook for a year now, but it is oh-so-not my kind of thing. 99% of my social networking effort is spent right here at ActiveRain.
