If, horror of horrors, I run out of books! My husband says I'm an addict and I've been know to get re-dressed at 11pm to run to our 24 hour grocery store if I am out of reading material. The owner of our local trade a book smiles when she sees me come through the door because she knows her "fronter shelf" (with newer books) is about to be restocked. Before discovering blogging, I averaged 30 to 40 books a month, but now I'm down to 25 or so a month. Toby Boycetagged me for this book meme and it has taken way to long to respond because figuring out my top 5 favorite books is incredibly hard! One of the most influential books I've ever read and tried to apply is Smart Women Finish Rich. I read this book in 1999, and for the 1st time understood the "magic of compounding interest. If fact I shared it with my youngest son who is 19 now and has a mutual fund and IRA already! Chapter 7, on raising financially smart kids should be a required reading for all parents.
I need and appreciate John W. Reilly's Language of Real Estate so much that I have 3 copies of it, one at home, one on my desk at my real estate office, and one for my agents in our office library! This is a super easy reference tool and has excellent definitions and tools throughout.
I bought this for my 3 football players in hope they would read something: Hurricane Season: A Coach, His Team, and Their Triumph in the Time of Katrina by Neal Thompson. I wound up picking it up at midnight one night and not putting it down until I finished it! This is a true story of perseverance and passion. The message in this book is powerful and moving, even if you are not a football fan, I highly recommend reading this one.
Here I go, bending the rules! Instead of one book, how about anything by James Patterson,I love the Alex Cross series, Womens Murder Club series, Maximum Ride series, in fact I don't think I've found one of his yet that didn't engross and entertain me! And now to wrap it up, I'll share my guilty pleasure: I love Science Fiction and Fantasy! I'll read anything but space opera and one of my current favorite authors is Sharon Shinn, she takes me to several other worlds when I need to escape! Who's next? Let's see if we can get Kimberly Hunter, Tiza Major-Pozner and Mike Mueller to share their favorites. |
Michelle~
I will read a cereal box, too! It has been awhile that I have picked up a good book. With all the Reading on the Internet, I have found little reason for book hunting. I have my computer set up to deliver so many articles and stories of interest, that I can stay busy in all perpetuity!
(GOOGLE ALERTS) the Google Sidebar, keeps all these tidbits at my fingertips!
Thanks!
30-40 books a month? Wow- that is a lot of reading! I myself love to read but never seem to have the time anymore.
My problem would be getting so into my book that after the kids would go to bed I would relax with a cup of coffee and just read away. the next thing I would know it was 3am and I have to be up in just 3 hours to get the kids off to school!
I also found reading works well for me if I am having trouble sleeping. I would read for about 30-45 minutes and my eyes would be heavy enough to call it a night.
Maureen - thanks for stopping by. I'm right thre with you, I like the kid cereal boxes with big tyoe and word games, lol!
Todd - after 11pm my living room is officially the library, hubby goes to bed, tv is off and the kids are not allowed to talk in that room. I'm a night owl so I go to bed a little before the time you get up! Sleep, who needs more than 4 hours anyway :)
Sybil - I do the same thing! Books everywhere!
Mott - I read alot online also, but love the feel of a book in my hand.
Sandi - glad you enjoyed the title, it'a a joke around my house. Thanks again for compiling the book meme list!
Maureen - I wasn't allowed to watch much tv while growing up. My Mom was a book lover and even made special occasions out of going book shopping. Somehow I learned to read very fast. I can read a typoical size book in 1 to 2 hours. With the cost of books now, I wish I could read slower and many nights I too stay up way to late reading or blogging.
Kimberly - all of Bach's books are good and Language of Real Estate is an excellent reference tool a couple of years after you get your license - you know when you are trying to explain something you understand, but the word just don't flow easily!
Before I had a child, I read a lot but with a 3 year old and my work--I just don't have the time. I do miss it terribly. One day........in the meanwhile, read a good book for me.
