I remember my first convention well. I went to a few classes, ate a few meals, and hid in my room the rest of the time. I knew almost no one, and it was just so hard to put myself out there!
Flash forward several years and many conventions later... I now take full advantage of everything the conventions have to offer, from the classes, networking, and even a tennis tournament or bingo! I have met so many wonderful people at these conventions, and it's now to the point that I recognize more people than I don't. Realtors don't go into this business because they are rude, insensitive, and boring. (well okay, most of them don't) Realtors as a group are outgoing, friendly, and helpful! I've learned that it's not so hard to introduce myself to a stranger in the lunch line or the opening ceremony, exchange cards, and maybe even meet up at the trade show or party!
I wish someone had told me how much time I was wasting that first year!! Our annual Georgia Association of Realtors is being held in San Destin, Florida September 22nd-25th, and I can't wait! I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. I'm also looking forward to soaking up all the knowledge I can. Included in the registration is the possibility to take upwards of 20 educational hours!

If you've never been to your state's convention, make an effort to attend this year. I know it's a lot of time, a lot of money, and what will you do with your kids?? There are a million reasons we can dream up not to go, but at the end of the day, this is our career. It's not a hobby, not something we want to be just OK at. We want to excel (or you wouldn't be reading this!!), and to excel, we have to give 110%.
Make a friend, enjoy the time "away", and if you see me...please come up and introduce yourself! We just might have something in common!
P.S. Don't forget about the opportunity to create a referral network this way!
