Gourmet Kitchen with Spacious Food-Prep Island. What Were They Thinking ?

Real Estate Agent with Serving Mentor, and all of Lake County, Ohio

I was looking through the available homes today.  I have a buyer who is very "kitchen conscious."  I guess you could easily say that having a nice spacious kitchen is one of her top "hot buttons."

So you can just imagine how "up" I felt when I read in the comments... all about the "gourmet kitchen" with all the 42-inch hanging cabinets, the oodles of counter space, and the over-sized gourmet food-prep island.

If you can imagine all of that... you can then probably imagine how UN-excited I was when I saw the actual picture of this wonderful, spacious gourmet kitchen.  And... just as was written... it has its very own "over-sized gourmet food-prep island."

Ummmm... anybody see an island here ?  I think there's one her somewhere.  I am guessing that neither this Listing Agent nor this seller... used the services of a home stager in preparing to market this home.

So, just how quickly would you jump to your computer keyboard to email this lovely picture to your ready-to-buy buyer ?  What were they thinking ?

That kitchen calls for an overhaul - declutter to make it look bigger and inviting.

Rosalinda, it needs both an overhaul, and maybe a front-end loader to get all of the excess stuff out of there.  A professional staging would make a major difference as well.

WOW! lol. I think if they decluttered...um, put away...um, clean before taking the picture and get the kitchen at a different angle, it MAY actually be a cute space. Not the "over-sized gourmet" kitchen but something okay. Good luck finding that dream kitchen. I feel the same way about kitchens.

Diane, I think so many of us Realtors really love our kitchens, and then to see something really cluttered like this, well... it makes me dizzy.

Miss Carolyn, you really shouldn't take photos of your new kitchen and pass them off as someone else's.  LOL.  Seriously, who in their right mind, agent or seller, would think this photo is going to help sell the house?

That is just the problem.  The person taking the picture was obviously not in their right mind.

This is just another example of how a picture tells a thousand words....in this case, it does not invite any showings!

Hi Carolyn,  another home that is ALL kitchen and nothing else.  Nice post!

Karen, one of the many problems with a picture like this is that it encourages the prospective buyers and their buyer's agents to think that if the seller cannot take care of such an obvious problem like shown in this picture, then the mind wanders and wonders what could be wrong with other things in the home that are NOT so obvious.

Dan, being "all kitchen and nothing else" is usually not such a bad thing.  Most folks love a large kitchen, but here... the picture just makes you wonder what the problem is.  And, thanks for your kind words.

Yikes Carolyn.  The kitchen looks so small with all that junk on the 'island'.  Plus, the angle that picture was taken isn't the best, either.  This goes on my "how not to take home pictures" list.

It does not look bad...

Take off everything from the counter top and the refrigerator...

Carolyn, if your buyer had listed in their parameters "lived in", this would be a great house for them!

All it takes is a few minutes to clear away the clutter even if it is only to take a picture.

"It only takes a moment"--the song from Hello Dolly" comes to mind.  Put the clutter away, the buyers will stay---leave it out, the buyers will doubt----that they can live without clutter.

Carolyn, this is too much! Brag about a large counter and then take a picture of it jammed with stuff! Is that to show how much junk it can hold? lol That would NOT excite any of the buyers we work with :)

How sad is that! The most important part of the kitchen and it's hidden by all the mess...Clean up the clutter!!
