Friggin... eh! listen up Americans!!!... a Canadian wants to set the record straight.

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with Royal LePage Maximum Realty.,Brokerage - Greater Toronto Area

In 2009, while phone interviewing Realtors for a buyer referral to Florida, I was confronted with a most upsetting agent, and was hurt by the conversation. Sara (not her real name) had the nerve to say that my buyers (and Canadians as a whole) were opportunists and poaching property due to the US economic situation. Actually, they owned manufacturing facilities in the United States, employed and supported the economy, and gave back generously to the local community. I wasn't about to enlighten her to this fact, I didn't think she deserved it.

I know in my heart that the majority of Americans don't feel this way but I feel a need to set the record straight. Canadians are more concerned about you, as people, and your well being, than we let on.katrina

Hurricane Katrina was a horrible natural disaster. While catching the recaps and highlights of the tragic stories, both on CNN and CBC, I'm reminded of the atmosphere at home during these events. Tonight's media reminders, prior to the President's visit to New Orleans, sparked a strong emotional cord to me. I remember it well.

Dear Americans, yes you! In case some of you weren't aware of it, our world stopped too. We were glued to the news and turned to each other in concern. We did our best without expectation of pracbc mr dressupise or compensation.

We're not only geographical neighbours (and yes... it's spelled correctly), more importantly, we're your brothers and sisters; we are associates, and your close family, we are attached to you emotionally.

We grew up learning on Sesame Street and Mr. Dressup, ABC Sports and Hockey Night in Canada, Bruce Springsteen and Anne Murray, Jiffy Peanut Butter and Maple Leaf Bacon.

Get it now? We are with you every day. We cheered when Armstrong walked on the moon, and cried when shuttle Challenger exploded. We celebrated your Bicentennial with the big ships in NYC harbor. On 911 we stopped our lives to pray and gather in our homes, in and our churches. Your  stranded travelers became our children, your tears wet our shoulders, and your confusion was our call to embrace you.  There were no borders or dissimilarities between us (then or now), neither sympathetically or in    empathy, we didn't see distinctions.challenger 1986

A characteristic between siblings is that the younger child always pays more attention to the older one. We're like your little brothers and sisters, Canadians tend to know you much better than you know us. If you don't believe it, just ask Rick Mercer, and if you don't know who he is, discussion closed.

All in all, we have our own culture and nuances' that keep us Canadian, yet some Americans don't know how close to them we really are.

About us Canadians, we rarely spend time analyzing and pointing fingers. Historically, we just get to the doing part. We jump quickly and act accordingly when it comes to human concerns. We take action and move towards a solution when helping people in crises.  We don't give a hoot about the politics, instead we prayed for Michael Brown to help the victims of Katrina, not criticize him.

We buy American Real Estate and you buy ours, we trade and not steal, we say ‘thank you' a lot, but we don't poach. In fact, we're more likely to give the fish mouth to mouth if we hit our limit.

So if Love is Action then we show it often... For all the good and not so good, the politics and opposing views, for all that you are... we love ya.

Oh! By the way...Sara didn't get the referral.

I've had buyers from Canada, it was a real pleasure working with them! Better manners than some Americans (Sara?)

With such a lack of sensitivity, it's amazing she is in this business. With comments like that it seems that she had something on her mind other than getting a referral. BTW, I'm in South Florida if you have any more people looking to come down here.

LESLIE: Thanks! If she reads this, she may well give herself a good whack! .. I appreciate the comment.

CHRIS: I was also very surprised!! She was one of five agents I contacted through our Re/Max directory, two never returned my call, and the one I finally gave the referral to... followed up, was fantastic, hit it off with my clients, and sold them an upscale condo.

BARBARA: Thanks Barb... na! I just listened politely but would never consider doing business with such a attitude.

STEVE: Thanks... no! not your Sara. Beer and wines too!

PHIL: Thanks ... I haven't checked the roaster to see if she's still around! email me your service area and FB me too. We can stay in touch...  ( don't worry, we export idiots too! he he...)

LINDA: Exactly... we're all contributing to each others well being.

COLEEN: No apologies necessary!! thanks,, I found them a great husband and wife team and they got along famously.

SALLY: I was close to using The Friendly Giant. Do you think Joe would approve... ya! I remember Joe, I hope they're going to revive that character. thanks for commenting.

JOETTA: Whatever do you mean?

That was a response to you referring to Canada as the little brother or sister of America. You know, how the older siblings don't want the younger ones following them around?

Very well written post Sergio. When you look at the big picture, our two countries have a lot more in common with each other than with any other countries. I still like that old standby A Canadian is sort of like an American, but without the gun.

It's only natural that when we can afford it, we'd want to buy properties in a sunny climate.

Joetta:Thanks for clarifying that comment. I will tag along willingly and stay quite and watch and learn from my more experienced sister. The benefit to me; I can learn what to do, and what not to do...Awe the Canadian advantage I guess...

Malcolm:Thanks very much for that comment. Coming from you, it's a big complement because of your writing background. As far as the gunless statement... let's keep the myth alive, remember that we still have a gun registry.

Sergio - I will have to check my source for dates but I believe in one year Canadians spent 9 billion dollars on US Real Estate ..... we are doing our share to help bring their market back.

ps we also have our Sara's here

Sergio, you are one fine man!  I think you just "spanked" a bunch of Americans and I am so proud of you.  Great post, and excellent job of setting the record straight.

I hope you "spanked" Sara at the time too!

Kathy:That sounds like an extraordinarily high figure and it would shock me if correct. It must include commercial holdings and corporate real estate portfolios. Regardless, it's a sign that Canadian's do enjoy investing in our neighbours' market.

Sara's exist everywhere... I'm surrounded by Canadians that don't appreciate our American siblings.... most go with the opinions of political rhetoric.

Roger:Thanks Roger.... It was meant that way! I really wanted to let our older siblings aware that we are all on the same ship. We are all closely related ... so both sides of the border should be mindful of stupid thinking. Sara- Well.. I hope she read this but I doubt she it will change her thinking. I don't think she's a Norman Vincent Peale reader.. Love ya Rog!

Ty,

Thanks for that comment and observation. I'm grateful that it's not the popular consensus among Americans. As a matter of fact, by my experiences, it was a oddity.

Keep up the great posts at Envelope RE... very informative.

Valerie: Awe to be a snowbird... I hit Florida twice last year and absolutely love it. I see why the syndrome exists... I could do 6 months in the sun every year. I'm happy you found us on the group CANADIAN BACON, and thanks for the email. Valerie at RLP Gale... for all your Ottawa real estate needs.... got it!

Al and Peggy: You Guyz... thanks so much! I'm a hopeless coffee addict myself and always carry a Starbucks card. Actually, I once did 2.6M of business at Starbucks in a 3 months, and met and proposed to my girlfriend at the local coffee house.. here's the link...( I will impress your referrals with a Starbucks surprise too.. but not as costly as this one.)

Surprise marriage proposal (short music video)...

Don't let one bad egg get you down!  My mother was acutally in the middle of Katrina as she lives just outside of New Orleans.  Unfortunately there is still alot of work to be done down there.

As for that rude agent she shouldn't even be thinking in terms of Canadians and Americans.  We are all just people.

No way Debra! It upset me so much because it's out of character with most of my American contacts and business dealings. Your mom must have experienced such horrible time these past years. I know that the area has not recovered but the spirit and survival instinct of Americans will pull them through.

Thanks for stopping in to comment.

Sergio, I love the post. Bless you for being the one to set the record straight. We are a little full of ourselves down here at times. We just tend to think everything good is a U.S. product, every great star is American and so on. We really mean nothing by it....I agree with you. We have more in common than othewise and we need each other.

Just so you'll know. Our summer houses along the coast of southern Maine wereoften filled with the most lovely French Canadians. In fact the neighborhood where I grew up was Westbrook, Maine but it had another name, Frenchtown. There was a large  concentration of folks of French Canadian heritage there. We (the Edwardses) were literally the only protestants on the block by the way..and we were the only familythat did not speak french. As you know those folks left the Maritimes, some settled along the way but many are in Louisiana where we revere our Cajun culture and likely take all the credit .lol.

Oh sorry, I ramble on. Spent the summer of 77 in Montreal also. Now that is for another time!

Charles,

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences. I'm honoured that you feel so compelled to explain your/our connection to each other. It's obvious that our cultures are interwoven and our country's share some very important trades of which are very informed. The history of the underground railroad and the Canadian link is also another important story. We both can go on for pages on proving the point.

I don't feel that Americans are full of themselves. Actually, I found most are like yourself, well informed and compassionate.

A standout comment.. thanks.

Sergio
