Wall Decals: Do or Don't?

By
Home Stager with Nestings: Connecticut Home Staging and Model Homes

Wall decals:  Are they a "Do" or a "Don't" when your house is on the market?  Wall decals were recently featured by Michael in the glass box challenge on Design Star.  I've seen lots of them in children's rooms.  The graphics can range from small butterflies and flowers to life-sized hocky players, bearing down on you with the puck.  Another type of decal are words:  quotes, slogans, good wishes, "Live, Love, Laugh" and the like.

As a professional Home Stager, I usually recommend they be removed because buyers read them as "wallpaper" - and a problem, even though they're not.  Buyers may think they're difficult to remove and/or may leave damage to the paint finish.  In fact, most of them simply peel off, leaving a clean surface behind, but why would you leave doubts in a buyer's mind?  You want your house to sell quickly!

There are times, however, when I might consider using decals.  I  know some other Stagers have used them with great effect.  Perhaps they'd be great for a model or spec home.  We've seen "wall words" and the like, but some decal designers are taking temporary wall decor to the next artistic level.  "Wall graphics for the commitment phobe" is how Blik wall decals describe their product line.  Graphics such as these get my creative juices going:

MirrorFab frame:  just add the mirror!

QA LaceLike Queen Anne's Lace - my fave!

SilhouettesWho needs real furniture for Staging - LOL!

How would you use wall decals, if at all?

I prefer the decals to be removed when I list a home. Keep it simple is my motto

Julia...

These are interesting new ways to grab attention, but like Harry, I prefer the clean slate.

Harry & Richard:  Thanks for the feedback - I agree.  Model homes may be a different story, though.

I don't see these much....would probably suggest they be removed.  I do really like the Queen Anne Lace....that might need to stay!!

Like you Julia, I like the Queen Anne's Lace decal and think it could be utilized for the better, very classy. So far I haven't encountered them in staging. LOL at your last one, very funny!

Julie, I love decals for decorating and have purchased a few at Home Goods, on clearance, but have never found the right place to use them for staging.  Without some planning and thought I can see how some potential buyers would not like them and see them as too personal, but they are fun IMO.

Julie, I used them but not on the wall. I framed it and got nice art pieces.

A also did a fake window with birds and branches motive.

Julie - Love this post - especially that last picture!  I've steared clear of wall decals, even though I drool over them when I see them in the store.  I would never rule them out completely, and must agree with the others that that "Queen Anne's Lace" decal could be used.

I love Anna's idea of framing them - she's so clever!

Sandi - Your daughter's room sounds so charming!

Shelley, Kathy & Cynthia:  There are so many to choose from!

Ginger:  So far I have refrained from purchasing, but might for a model home design.

Anna!!!  How clever and artistic you are!  Looks like another blog post in the making - hint hint!

Sally:  Right?

Valerie:  A buyer's nightmare.

Hi Julia, I am a fan and use them on Design Projects, I am trying to limit temptation for staging, however they can draw interest and can be a nice staging element for defined projects.. i.e. fake window in a basement..

Words and decals are personal and staging is depersonalizing.  Wall stuff is too much like wallpaper.

I haven't used them in Staging - but in Children's rooms for Interior Design Clients, I have. One teen girl wanted the lyrics to a particular John Lennon song on her wall - I thought it was a very cool idea.  We did them in dark brown script against a light blue wall and filled most of the wall.

I think the have the possibility of bringing something very eye-catcing and unique to the space.  It all depends on the space though.

Would you believe there were wall decals in the home I consulted on this morning?

I agree with you...I wouldn't use them staging and I think in most cases I would have them removed if sellers already had them.
