Mad Men ... the Best Show on Television

I'm a big movie fan ... esp the old black and whites.  But I also scan the channels for what might look interesting ... and I tape everything for future viewing (or maybe not viewing).  In other words, I almost never watch a show at the time it was on.  I've only been doing that for several years ... but it is a great way to use one's time so wisely.

Now:  Mad Men ... which is the best show on television right now in terms of a continuing series.  On AMC, it has started its 4th year coming out in August of each year.  My wife and I usually get in the swing of "Mad Men" again by catching reruns (which I also tape) before the next year's series begins.

The show follows the ad men in New York City during the 1950s and has continued along with them into the late 1960s with this particular year's efforts.  In particular, Don Draper is the leading ad man, quite a drinker, divorced with three children, and continuing his exploits with women.  The rest of the cast involves his partners in the law firm ... with the occasional review of their personal lives.  There is one ad person who is a woman who has quite an interesting lifestyle. And the one older partner is also quite interesting.

What makes the show so good is the authenticity that it brings of the 1950s, the style of the guys, their problems with women, the company life vs the home life.  The one hour shows are carefully written with clear ideas of what they want to present.  That is why "Mad Men" has one the award for "Best Drama Series" for the past three years.  The awards show was held last evening on television.

The real beauty of AMC is that they rebroadcast the show at least 3 or 4 times each week in case some viewers miss it.  But the real thing is that when you tape it ahead, you never miss it.                   Dustin
