For 30 years, the food co-op in the Mount Airy section of Philadelpha was where everybody in Mt. Airy would meet. What a great store. If you had a neat new recipe with an odd ethnic ingredient, chances are the co-op would have it. I especially loved going there during blizzards. Lots of the staff lived nearby. You could always get hot chocolate and marshmallows and soup or ingredients for soup. The had real special ethnic bagels. Weird shaped, real boiled bagels. Well, when the grandma, specialty grocery....we deliver....store went bankrupt in Chestnut Hill....down the road....the co-op bought it! It took forever but they finally opened. Wow. I bought the vegetable I crave: black Tuscan kale. How beautiful and so fresh! I needed eggs and didn't dare buy them from the supermarket. I knew the co-op would have cage free, organic eggs that would not give me salmonella. I am so thrilled to have the co-op in Chestnut Hill....althought I still love the cramped, old Mt. Airy branch.
