Danny's Law- will only work if people mail in that registration card
Thankfully my husband and I raised our three children without a child product or toy ever hurting them. All parents are not so fortunate. I heard on the news this morning and really think "Danny's Law" requiring manufactures to notify product owners directly of recalls is great, but I see a problem. A problem that must be addressed. Frankly I could think of a better way, but no one ask me how to design the law.
It works this way... manufactures of child products (cribs, strollers, car seats, play pens, swings ect...) must include a "recall registration card" in the original package. IF that card is mailed in when the product is purchased then any recall notices will be sent by mail to the owner of record. So the problem arises that owners still won't be notified UNLESS THEY MAIL THE CARD. As I sat there after the news story I thought about how many times I just toss that registration card that comes with a product I buy. I'd have to guess it's about 99% of the time. If you do also, maybe we should rethink this.
As it stood before recalls were required to be posted, sometimes in stores, on websites and they are on my local news weekly. I got a recall notice about a clip in my floorboard that needed replacing in the mail for my car, but if my child's baby crib had been recalled I would have been expected to find out on my own.
So if you buy a baby product for yourself or a grandchild MAKE SURE THAT CARD GETS SENT BACK. It just takes a moment and could spare a lifetime of regret. If you buy one for a friend as a gift encourage them to mail in the card, have them fill it out when they open the gift and mail it for them. Don't take chances with our children, after all they ARE our future.
