Business Of The Week - Boathouse Sushi, Rohnert Park CA

boathouse sushi sign welcomes youYou know that old saying "You can take the girl out of the Country, but you can't take the Country out of the girl"? Well, that pretty much sums up what I'm all about. Growing up on a dairy farm was where I learned that meat and potatoes is what is supposed to be on the dinner plate. With a glass of milk, of course.

I got over the milk part early on but the meat and potatoes stuck with me for a very long time. So when I was invited to go out for sushi, I resisted with a passion. While my friends ate raw fish, I tried my best to eat tempura and teriaki chicken which I didn't care for either.

plate full of sushiThen I stuck my toe in the water and I tried a California Roll. (I know, I know, some of you are rolling your eyes right now, California Rolls don't qualify as sushi). Hey, they were good! Even that green stuff is good. Hot, but good. Hey, look at me, I'm eating sushi! This was the type of event that would inspire me to call Mom.  Mom ... guess what?

The years have gone by and I have slowly but surely tried just about everything on a sushi menu. After avoiding sushi restaurants for most of my life, I'm now starting to get really picky about which ones I will patronize. Who knew? And that brings me to Boathouse Sushi.

In my mind, Boathouse Sushi rose from the ashes. The restaurant that was there previously can only be described as a dive. And I don't mean dive in the good sense. I didn't dine at Boathouse Sushi for the longest time because of the inferior impression I already had of the physical building.

I kept hearing a lot of really good reviews from friends and they kept telling me you have to go, you have to go. So I went ... and I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was great. The employees were great. The FOOD was great. How much do I like this place? I take my family there for dinner on special occasions, that's how much I like it.

If you love sushi, try Boathouse Sushi in Rohnert Park!

Hi Cynthia, By almost everything, does that mean you eat the raw stuff too? I must defent the California roll and consider it sushi (it's the only sushi I've ever tried), never ate raw fish though. What's your favorite? jay

Jay - I only eat the raw stuff now, except for a roll called the dragon roll, shown in the photo in front. The dragon roll is crab or shrimp tempura along with cucumber, avacado and lots of other goodies. For dessert I have tobiko with quail egg (flying fish roe with a raw quail egg on top). Picking a favorite is not easy, I love scallops, salmon and tuna. Not so much for eel, it can get a little fatty.

I'm a pretty big sushi fan myself, although I'm not really much of a raw fish person. Many people still confuse sashimi with sushi. Rolls such as California rolls (rice on the outside) are refered to as yukiwa-maki.  Whatever you call them, they are delicious.  Sometimes we can surprise ourselves by liking things when we give them a shot.

Good point, Malcolm, I use sushi as a general term, but I'm always referring to raw fish when I do. There are a lot of interesting creations now to get non-raw-fish eaters to try something new.

Cynthia, the Boathouse Sushi sounds like a great place to eat. I was just introduced to it at a relatively new local restaurant a few weeks ago.  After my initial concerns, I'm anxious to return. Your post gives me even more confidence!

I'm a huge sushi fan! If I ever find myself in your neck of the woods, I'm heading on over to Boathouse Sushi and telling them I came on Cynthia Larsen's recommendation.

Mary Kay - I was super skeptical for quite awhile. Take it slow and ease into it, there will be some things you like and some you don't. It took years for me to get to this point, now it is a super treat to have.

Craig - that's the spirit!

Boathouse is great!  They opened a new location near my office in Santa Rosa, but the one in Rohnert Park is still my favorite.  Good choice!
