Couch To 10K - I'm Taking This Challenge!

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage South

Run University

I've been talking about about it......finally I've actually taken the first steps to getting back in shape!

I starting running nearly a couple of years ago, and though I wasn't the fastest thing on two feet and couldn't run all that far, I surprised myself with my little achievements!  Then life got in the way and I just didn't have time for my runs anymore.

When I woke up yesterday I had no intention that this would be the day I would get up off my butt, but I happened to see on a local news show that a group was meeting at 6 PM for the first training run of the Couch to 10K Program, so before I had time to talk myself out of it I found my running shoes and joined them at the BB&T parking lot next to the Mountain Brook YMCA.  This training program is divided into two groups...Running 101 is for beginners and Running 201 is for those that can already run two miles but need additional training to be able to run a 5K.

As we add more distance to our runs I expect the next few weeks to be a challenge, but that's okay.  Now that I've gotten past the procrastination of getting started I'm excited about it!

Last night we began by walking a distance equal to half a lap around a football field, jogging (or slogging) a half lap and then repeating for a total of four laps (one mile) followed by walking another lap for a cool down.  I did it without any problem and felt great afterwards!  Today is a mandatory rest day.  The plan for the first week is to do this (and no more, no matter how good we feel) for at least four runs and no more than six during this first week.  We are getting ourselves used to running and next week we begin adding to that.

The goal of this 10 week training program is to run in the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure 5K on October 9th and the Vulcan Run 10K on November 6th.  Our coach is Danny Haralson and you can learn more about his background, coaching and running programs at his Run University website.

Good luck Ann!  I tried running and there is nothing I like about it, but every time I see someone running I feel the urge to try again and then my mind reminds me that it's not for me.  I've had several friends run marathons and halves, and most of them started in their 30's and 40's.  Have fun!

Christine, we'll see how far I can go.  My daughter keeps me inspired.  She started from the couch too and has run one half marathon already and is going to do it again in Las Vegas in December!  I don't care about running races, but personal improvement will make me happy enough.

Good for you!  My best friend just finalized her divorce and she is determined to get back into shape.  I have been a sporadic exerciser at best, but 2 weeks ado I went out and bought a pair of Shape-ups too!  Now we are walking three miles a day 5-6 days a week.  So not only am I catching up with my friend and supporting her goals, but I am creating a great routine for myself too!  Best of luck to you!

Ok Ann, just go ahead and make me feel guilty!  JK, of course.  This sounds great and is an inspiration to me to get moving but probably not marathoning.  I just lost 30 lbs. so getting on a walking program would be the icing on the cake for me.  Good luck!

Marchel, I plan to report my progress.....I think that will help keep me accountable and on track.  The last time I did this I did the same program on my own.  Hoping that being a part the group will push me a little more.

Karen, I used to walk 3 miles most days and loved it. I wish I had not gotten out of the habit.....

I have also just started jogging.  I ran a 5k for the first time this summer and finished.  It was hard, but I did it.

I asked my husband, why am I doing this now that I am 46?  It is so hard, and he replied, now you have time - before you were too busy with the kids!  I guess he is right.

You will get great satisfaction out of running.  So, good luck and keep us posted!

It is so easy to get out of the habit of regular exercise.  I work out at a community college fitness center.  One of my goals is to work on specific parts of my body that have been injured and prevent me from running.  My achilles tendons and my lower back make it nearly impossible to run.  So, my goal is to get those two parts into shape so I can run again.

Good for you Ann!  I'll be anxious to follow your progress all the way up to race day.  It seems like I come up with several reasons excuses for not exercising regularly. :-)

Wow.  I can't climb a flight of stairs.  That is a great thing to be doing for yourself.  I absolutely detest exercise.

Andy, I don't know about the 10K....even if I don't do that I'm already better off than I was this time last week.

Ellie, congrats on the 5K!

Thanks Charles!

Bob, I definitely got out of the habit.  Hope you can get back to careful!

Debbie, I loved Pilates......something else I got out of the habit of doing.

Mary, today was my 4th run.  It felt great!

Judi, I know.....and I have not been taking care of myself for months.

Jane, we'll see how long I stick with this!

Hi Ann - By blogging about it, you've added a level of accountability. Ten weeks to a 10K sounds like something you can easily accomplish. Good luck!
