About every 73 seconds in the United States, some form of identity theft occurs.  One such form of ID theft is real estate or loan fraud.  Don't let your biggest asset, your beautiful new Glenview home, fall victim! That's right - there is such a thing as real estate fraud.

theft,thiefDuring the home buying process, there are some specific steps that you can take to prevent ID theft.
If you fill out a mortgage quote request online, ensure that you are on a secure network.  Web addresses that begin with "http://www" are not secure sites.  On the other hand, websites that are secure begin with "https://www"  (Note: the "https" is plural).  

Real estate transactions require a lot of paperwork and signatures.  Shred any unnecessary paperwork as soon as they are no longer needed.  The paperwork you do need, keep in a home safe or off the premises of your home altogether; such as a safety deposit box.

The best way to stop real estate ID theft is to handle all of your financial transactions in person.   If you need to mail documents, use certified mail.  However, try avoid mailing and faxing personal information whenever possible.

In the process of purchasing your Glenview home, your credit will be ran numerous times.  Look at your credit report frequently and question any inquiries to your credit that do not look familiar.  You can help stop ID theft before it starts by being on top of your credit.

Sometimes in trying to purchase a home yourself, you can fall prey to a fraudster.  This is a person who takes advantage of your trust, gains your personal information and then uses it to steal your identity through your real estate transaction.   If the process seems to easy and the deal to good to be true; it may be just that.

Do not sign any documents without consulting a real estate lawyer and do not disclose any personal information without researching the seller and loan company thoroughly.
