Evacuating Cape Cod

So everyone's talking about hurricane Earl. There's no question that it will hit us here in Massachusetts - the question is, "How hard?" I've been reading about MEMA's plan to evacuate Cape Cod. Basically they will close off the smaller roads leading over the bridges and force everyone over the bridges on one road. Yeah, that'll work! You know what it's like trying to get over the bridge when there's an event going on at the skating rink. Never mind what it's going to be like when the entire Cape is trying to get off.

Start thinking now about what you are going to do. The storm will hit on Thursday evening. That means you need to leave during the day on Thursday - the same time the rest of the Cape will be leaving. If you are going to evacuate, I suggest that you leave on Wednesday. If the storm doesn't hit us much, then you've left for nothing. So what? If it does, then you could be in big trouble come Thursday and Friday.

There are so many elderly on the Cape. Please check in on your neighbors to make sure they have the ability to stay safe. If they refuse to go, and most will refuse to go, pick up some extra water for them. Maybe ask if they have flashlight batteries and enough medications in case the power goes out for a few days. It's not often that we have so much advance warning. So let's take advantage of it.

I have been watching this; my dear friend lives in Southport, North Carolina and it looks like the hurricanes are moving in.

Tom - It's hitting North Carolina today, I believe. It's gone down from Cat-4 to Cat-3 and by the time it hits the Cape it should only be Cat-2 so it's getting better. I worry about the elderly, that they have water and electricity.

Katrina was just a little over five years ago.  There were some very scary videos from people who decided to stay.  I hope we have learned many lessons from Katrina, including how to do an orderly evacuation.  It sounds like it won't be hitting the Cape so hard this time, but it will probably hit somewhere.  Fortunately you still have some time to get out the warnings.

I'm trying, Dan. I am not going to be in town for it but I asked people I know to check on some elderly that live in Bourne - on the water but more of a lake than the direct ocean. They won't leave so hopefully someone makes sure they have water and batteries.
