Farewell to Boston and Cambridge

After living in Boston and Cambridge for the last 4 years, my daughter and her husband are relocating back here to the Silicon Valley, California. While they always expected to do so at some point, the move comes much sooner than anticipated, and sooner than they would have chosen had life not presented its own timetable.

During these four years, they have:

  • enjoyed living in a small, 1-bedroom apartment in Back Bay -- close enough to Fenway Park to enjoy their beloved Red Sox
  • learned to live with one car, commuting by MTA to jobs in downtown locations and the suburbs
  • made fabulous friends--the kind who cry when learning of the move, and then throw a farewell party to send them off with hugs and love
  • enjoyed running along the Charles River
  • became part of tri-teams, competing in various events with friends in many different states
  • bought their first house, a beautiful, newly remodeled 2-unit townhouse in Cambridge, minutes from Inman Square and the Charles River that's so enchanting to explore
  • adopted their first pet, a rescue dog from Tennessee, who gives them as much love as she receives
  • continued to grow and evolve, meeting life's challenges as they occur

When moving to Boston, Susan was fortunate to continue with her career at a Bay Area bank; Gary was employed in Boston by a company recently bought out by Apple Computer. With both people working for Silicon Valley companies, it was inevitable that they'd return. And they are returning with life going well and the future bright.

It's hard to leave a place full of such good memories, and leaving so many friends behind.

But now it's time to look forward to all the new adventures life has in store.

This is an exciting area in which to live, a mecca for runners, bicyclers, hikers, swimmers. We're outdoors playing 12 months of the year. We have the Pacific Ocean for enjoying on days when the temperatures begin to climb inland, and the Sierra Nevada mountains for weekend ski trips (or day trips for warrior types!). San Francisco beckons with its neighborhoods, restaurants and nightlife--and outdoor adventures, too; San Jose with the Tech Museum; Mountain View restaurants and Center for the Performing Arts; Stanford University, University of Santa Clara, San Jose State University, and numerous other private and community colleges with lectures, speaker series.

And friends are here, waiting for them, too -- from high school, college, grad school and former workmates.

....not to mention families that love them and welcome them home--on September 1!

Welcome, Susan and Gary!

Susan and Gary Merrill

Boston is one of my favorite places, though I haven't been back there in years.  I can only imagine your joy at welcoming your children home.  Enjoy every minute of it.

I saw using the MTA as the commute option. Good idea and smart use of time. good luck to them.

Hi Geri -- it feels right to have them back. But I grew to love Boston, too, and now will have to manufacture reasons to visit.

Thanks for your well wishes, Bryan. They enjoyed having only 1 car; here in the Silicon Valley, that's not going to be an option for them. A whole new lifestyle awaits.

Russel, when people asked me why they chose Boston, I'd tell them 'cause they love the Sox. I'll let them know you command them to switch allegience -- how about them Giants?
