Some Things Should Just Be Private - Is Social Media Going Too Far?

I completely get the concept of Foursquare for driving business at a hyper-local level. It's an amazing tool and businesses should absolutely take advantage of what it offers. That said, the security issue scares me a bit. Is it really necessary for everyone to know your whereabouts 24/7? Having been the victim of a stalker type person, perhaps I'm just a bit conservative on this particular issue.

I caught an article on Yahoo today that really gives me pause. In an effort to take away the stigma of getting checked for STDs; Foursquare has started a new promotion that give rewards to users who "check-in" after STDs checkups. According to the article, "Members who "check in" for an STD test during the month of September will receive a special virtual "badge." I'm sorry, call me old fashioned, call me conservative (no one who knows me would put that label on me, except my 15 year old); some things just need to stay private.

I put STD check-ups in that category. Surely there are other socially acceptable ways to encourage people to take care of themselves without offering rewards. To me this crosses the boundaries of personal space. Maybe, personal space and privacy has simply gone out the window. While on the surface this is seems small; the level of personal information being shared online will have far reaching consequences down the road.

Breast cancer awareness has the pink ribbon, wouldn't it be more appropriate to allow users to support a cause in a similar.  Here is the link to the article:  Foursquare Offers reward for STD Checkups.

Clearly social media is changing the world faster than we can keep up.  What are your thoughts on this topic?

TMI happens and how you use social media is up to you...not someone else.

Andrew, yes that is true.  Still the question begs to be asked, just because you can, should you?

I don't have much to say on this post - I really don't even want to think about it.

Praful, the point here is that people have no concept of privacy.  It's just nuts.

Debbie and Carla - I agree.  Since I really focus on Social Media I couldn't help but share this information.  Are you Kidding Me is right!

I use foursquare whenever I go anywhere. Those mayorships can sometimes be beneficial. However, there are some times I will not use it, Dr.'s appt. of any kind are when I will not use it. But, I echo the first comment, its not social media itself, its how people use it. Just check out some of the videos on youtube.

Mike - yes I agree it is how you use it.  I simply question the shifting social mores where nothing is private.  It is not a judgement, just a question and topic of conversation.  I think that there a whole lot of 20 somethings that are posting what feels like innocent information online that will come to bite them later.

Kevin, you crack me up!

Yea, social media has gone to far.  It seams that the need to put out infromation about you or worse yet, someone else is greater than the need of privacy.  there is just to much misinformation that goes around because the need to be the first to report it.

Sounds like our media...doesn't it!

I have FourSquare on my phone...  I choose when I use it, it doesn't choose for itself.  The media hasn't gone too far, but some folks seem to have real issues figuring out how to censor themselves.

I would also add, that many on Foursquare are careful to post AFTER they leave the restaurant etc.  You could be stalked as well.  Too many people are putting out waaay too much info on themselves.

William, the social media revolution has made journalism both obsolete and relevant at the same time.  It is difficult to weed through fact from fiction.  Seems that common sense needs to prevail somewhere.

Lane - your point is well taken.  That said, encouraging people to use it is sort of social pressure that is new in society.  It's an evolutionary process.

Endre, thanks for dropping by and commenting.  Is it attention or social pressure?

Marcia - I am very careful on how I use Foursquare.  As consumers we will figure it out and most of us will find a balance.  It will be interesting to see what happens to these companies once the ambulance chasing lawyers get hold of things.

"Anything you say can and will be used against you" not only in a court of law. Employers, landlords, coop boards etc are vetting prospective applicants easily by finding out about them online.  What you do online can come back and bite you. Even something your teenager does online can hurt you.

Mitchell - the ramifications of what we do and say and the permanence of it are sobering.  The pressure is immense.
